The Best of Davis Square: My Top 10 Picks

Aug 15
Jumbo Talk

Davis Square is our favorite off-campus destination in Somerville. Davis is perfect for grabbing a meal, watching a movie, or even going bowling. It’s only a 10 minute walk from the Campus Center, but if you’re lazy like me, or it’s a little cold outside, then you can take our campus shuttle, the Joey. Here are some of my favorite places:

  1. The Somerville Theater is not your average movie theater. They show some of the newest blockbusters but also have live events and performances. They show reruns of movies on 35mm film and have bands perform; last year Vance Joy performed at the theater. If you get there early, they also have a mini “Museum of Bad Art” in the basement.

  2. Redbones is an amazing Southern BBQ restaurant that was first recommended to me from a Tufts alum in my hometown. From ribs to pulled pork, the food is amazing. I went a few weeks ago with one of my friends from Mississippi and she said it was the best BBQ she’s had (outside of the South, of course). My best advice- the portions are huge so come hungry!

  3. Kor Tor Mor is one my favorite Thai places in the area! My friends and I usually order food from campus here for my birthday! Pro tip: there’s only a few tables, so I like to get take out with friends and eat at the picnic tables down the street -- when it’s warm there’s usually live music.

  4. Flatbread Company is, if you can’t tell by the name, a flatbread pizza joint. The pizza is really good (and I’m from NJ so I’m picky) and the flavor combinations are really creative. Adjacent to Flatbread is a candlepin bowling ally so grab some friends, start your evening off with some bowling, and end it with pizza!

  5. Boston Burger Company was once featured on the TV show “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives”. Both Guy Fieri and I agree that the Mac Attack - a hamburger topped with both bacon and mac & cheese - is the best thing on the menu. Make sure to save room for dessert because they also serve amazing, candy-topped milkshakes.

  6. Buffalo Exchange is a fun thrift store. A good place to buy and sell gently-used clothes; it’s always worth a visit whenever my wardrobe needs a refresh! Sometimes, they have pop-up shops on campus (convenient!), and as a bonus, shopping from thrift stores is more sustainable than buying brand new clothes.

  7. JP Licks is a Boston ice cream chain, and the perfect end to any evening in Davis. The have a good selection of flavors, and have monthly specials, so even if you’re a regular, you can always try something new! I’m a big fan of the brownie batter and coffee flavors.

  8. Sugidama Soba & Izakaya is, according to my friend Lily, the best sushi place in Davis. The ambience is fun and it’s a local neighborhood favorite. The Somerville Roll is a student favorite!

  9. Posto has amazing Italian food, and I always come here when my family comes to visit! We have tried so many dishes: burrata, grilled octopus, salads, gnocchi, tagliatelle, and pizza - you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu!

  10. When Pigs Fly serves bread and is truly a magical place. The bread is baked fresh every day and comes in so many different flavors including: seasonal blueberry raspberry lemonade, apple cinnamon, rye, pumpkin, and sourdough. The breads are delicious and make great gifts to bring home for Thanksgiving!
