Where did all that time come from?
In college, you will have a lot more time on your hands, and most of it is yours to allocate. How do you make the right decisions about it?
One of the best parts of being a college student is all the perks that you can get, from discounted tickets, to free giveaways, to celebrity talks right at your school. I’m sure all colleges have some similar perks, but I do have to say that Tufts does a particularly great job providing students with fun, exciting opportunities throughout the school year.
One of the groups on campus that organizes most of these opportunities is called TUSC: the Tufts University Social Collective. In a pre-pandemic world, TUSC would organize dances and concerts, weekend events/giveaways, and free movie screenings. My favorite memory of TUSC events was when Antoni, from the show Queer Eye, came to speak and do a cooking demonstration; I even got to meet him!
Even during the pandemic, though, TUSC has done such an amazing job providing Tufts students with many cool free items and opportunities. Today, I wanted to highlight some of the events they’ve organized so far. I hope these following highlights will give you a good idea of the range of fun (free) events/opportunities that Tufts students are lucky to have!
Winter Weekend Gift Box: Both on-campus and remote students were able to order one of these gift boxes, which came with maroon sweatpants, a matching maroon travel mug, and several snacks and candy bars.
Slumber Party Gift Box: On-campus and remote students also had the option of ordering one of these boxes, which came with a customized airbrushed pillowcase, a face mask, an under-eye mask, a sleep eye mask that can be heated or cooled, and a bunch of snacks
BINGO: For the Spring 2021 semester, TUSC has organized bi-weekly BINGO, meaning that students get to try their luck to win big prizes every two weeks. My roommate actually won a TV during one of the BINGO sessions, so all my suitemates and I are now determined to also win.
Ukulele lessons: This semester, TUSC is offering two rounds of ukulele lessons. Students who sign up get a free ukulele, as well as free virtual lessons and access to other resources that teach them how to play. Three of my suitemates are currently signed up, and it’s such a joy to watch them learn to play this instrument.
Watercolor night: TUSC has offered many paint nights before, but this coming week, they’re offering watercolors, specifically. For this night, you get a free set of watercolors and some paper, as well as access to a guided painting demonstration.
Embroidery Night: This night happened a few weeks ago, but was so exciting! I’d never tried to embroider before, but I figured I might as well try. We were provided with an embroidery hoop, cloth, and some threads, and learned how to make some basic stitches. The final product was a cute design of lavender flowers that’s now hanging on my wall.
Grammy’s Watch Party Kit: This kit for Grammy Awards night is having sign-ups in a few weeks, and it’s open to both in-person and remote students. It’ll come with the following things: gourmet popcorn, sparkling water, cheese and charcuterie platter, cake pops, gourmet cookie, and party decor & props
