I absolutely love my housemates! These days I find myself reminiscing about fond memories of our time together. Recently, I’ve been thinking of December, maybe that’s related to the recent April snow in Boston.
One day I casually joked that we should all get matching pajamas and take holiday photos because why not!? A member of the Africana community suggested that we put together the “Capen Express.” One of my housemates explained the vision she had for the week-long event and we began planning.
The week before Thanksgiving break, one of my housemates and I made a run to Target in Central Square to find pajamas. We were thoroughly disappointed at the lack of options, but we made it work! A couple of days later we took our holiday photos and another one of our housemates made this cute holiday card with the list of events for the week (poster shown above).
That Tuesday, one of my housemates led “Cookies and Hot Chocolate” and it was a cute event with an assortment of homemade baked cookies and freshly brewed Swiss Miss hot chocolate.
On Wednesday, the Caribbean Student Organization and Black Student Union collaborated to present “Ginger Beer & Gingerbread.” Students raced against the clock and each other to make the best gingerbread house and sipped on ginger beer in the process. On Thursday, the Association of Latin American Students led a movie night. There was popcorn and snow cones for people to munch on while they watched Polar Express in the cozy Capen Lounge. On Friday, we held “Under the Mistletoe” which was a pajama-themed party for the community. We had DJ Papa Leche (aka Mathew, who is also on the Diversity Admissions Council) on the ones and twos and all class years showed up. Overall, we had a grand old time.
One thing I’ve always loved about Tufts is how creative people are and how we can come together to make events that are fun and chill. The Capen Express was a time I will fondly remember and hopefully future Capen residents continue this new tradition!
