8 Ways to Get Ready for Halloween: Dorm Edition

Oct 20
Jumbo Talk

The air is crisp. The trees are turning. The temperatures are dropping. You know what that means….FALL IS HERE! Halloween is coming up, and there’s no better way to get in that festive season spirit than decorating your dorm room with pumpkin spice everything. Here are eight creative, fun, and easy ways to get witchy in time for candy season!

  1. PUMPKINS!!! There’s nothing that says Halloween more than a good pumpkin. Stop by the SMFA cafe to get a cute mini pumpkin for a dollar! College tip: instead of carving messy, smelly pumpkin guts, use those art school skillz to Sharpie your decor on!
  2. Get those string lights glowin'! String up some orange lights in your room for added spooky ambiance. If you’ve got string lights already, try painting a thin layer of orange watercolor on them to add a tint of color. Easy, festive, and washable!
  3. Spooky scary skeletons! Hey, we can all use some anatomy and still life practice every now and then. Grab our boney friend from the second-floor drawing closet and sketch some studies! Hang 'em up in your room for Halloweenie decor.
  4. Witches, grab your broomsticks! Head to the woodshop and carve lil' broomsticks to hang around your dorm room for extra witchy vibes.
  5. CANDY! What would Halloween be without candy? Check out the ceramics room to wheelthrow yourself a nice bucket to store candy in. SMFA insider secret: the Wheelthrowing Anonymous club meets every Friday night for casual clay fun, so come on down and throw some spooky pots with us!
  6. Heat yourself some cider! Walk to Star Market during SMFA lunch break to pick up some cold cider. Then, heat it up for a steamy, delicious fall treat. Pro tip: sprinkle some cinnamon on top for extra flavor.
  7. Scary movie marathon! Turn on those ambient string lights and set up with some classic thrillers to get yourself in that Halloween vibe. Try The Shining or Psycho for some terrifying blasts from the past. Film students, check out a camera from our Media Stockroom and shoot your own haunted horror film!
  8. Costumes, costumes, costumes! Start thinking of your getup now, because the SMFA annual Halloween party is just around the corner and filled to the brim with fun, dancing, music, and CRAZY costumes!
