Internships: Introduction to the Workplace

One of the many benefits to living on the edge of one of the most dynamic and innovative cities in the nation is the opportunity to work with the hundreds of nonprofit and for-profit organizations, corporations, and institutions that make the Boston Metro area such an exciting place to study and live.

Gaining Experience, Building Networks

Employers prefer new graduates with experience beyond the classroom. From an employer’s perspective, skills and knowledge gained through internships differentiate entry-level candidates. For students, internships offer exposure to industries, career fields, and employers. With this background, they are better prepared to make decisions about life after Tufts. Contacts made during internships introduce students to the art of networking, a key skill throughout every career stage.

Tufts Career Services and Tufts Career Connect

Tufts Career Services continually posts internships in an online database, called Tufts Career Connect, which is where students will also look for full-time jobs as seniors. Internships are available in a wide range of industries, from financial services to health care. Opportunities vary in length from a year, to a semester, to a summer, or even several weeks. Some internships are highly structured while others are more individually tailored to a student’s interests and an employer’s needs.

Career Counseling and Resources

A team of Career Counselors is available to guide students through an internship search. Resources include workshops on specific fields; individualized coaching, from résumé preparation to interviewing skills; and alumni advising via panels and programs on campus.

Internship Grants

Internships may be paid or unpaid. To support students in exploring valuable opportunities that are not compensated, Career Services offers Internship Grants. The grants, available through a competitive application process, fund full-time unpaid summer internships.
