Academics

We're a major research University with the feel of a small liberal arts school

At Tufts, our academic programs are designed to teach students to make decisions, think independently, solve problems, take intellectual risks, challenge conventional wisdom, communicate effectively and explore the latest knowledge in a wide range of fields.

Here are some stats for you

Of the 4800 undergraduate students at Tufts, approximately 80 percent study in the School of Arts and Sciences, while the remaining 20 percent of students are enrolled in the School of Engineering.

The student/faculty ratio at Tufts is only 9/1, and the average class size tops out at 20 students. 75 percent of classes have 21 or fewer students while only 1 percent of the classes have more than 100 students. The University intentionally keeps class sizes small so our students can develop personal relationships with their faculty members– a top priority at Tufts.

About the schools and programs

The majority of courses at Tufts are taught by full-time professors, most of whom hold PhDs and/or terminal degrees in their field. Graduate teaching assistants are present in many classes to lead recitations or review sessions designed to reinforce material already presented by the professor during the lecture.

Without question, Tufts is a great place to study. We’re proud to be classified as a research university, but still be able to offer the benefits of an intimate liberal arts college. Our courses, along with the professors who teach them, are truly exceptional, and we hope you’ll take the time to explore them as you learn more about the academic community at Tufts.

Claire Conceison

Claire Conceison
Assistant professor, drama

WHY TUFTS: “A wonderful opportunity to come home. My parents both grew up on the edge of campus and my sister is an alumna, so I have a special fondness for Tufts. Also, Tufts has an excellent Ph.D. program in drama and its commitment to Asian theatre is very strong.”

CURRENT RESEARCH: “I’m working on a few different projects, one of which is a collaborative autobiography of the late Ying Ruocheng, a prominent actor/director and vice minister of culture in China during the 1980s.”

LATEST BOOK:
Significant Other: Staging the American in China (about how Americans have been portrayed in mainland Chinese plays during the past fifteen years)
