National Engineers Week Workshop

About

As part of National Engineers Week, Undergraduate Admissions is joining forces with the School of Engineering to offer a special half-day workshop to high school juniors and their families! This event is meant to introduce high school students to the world of engineering. Not only will families learn about what it means to be a collaborative, creative, and socially-conscious engineer at Tufts, but students will also spend an hour in a brand new Makerspace in a team challenge to build a Rube Goldberg Machine! The workshop will be offered in both the morning and afternoon of February 19th, 2020. Please see the full schedule below.

To register for the morning workshop, please CLICK HERE.

Morning Workshop Agenda

9:15: Admissions Information Session, Dowling 745

The admissions officer will lead you through the inner-workings of Tufts, and along the way you’ll learn about our kind and collaborative engineers and the broader community that makes up our School of Engineering.

10:00: Students: Rube Goldberg Machine Challenge, Nolop Makerspace

Come to the new Nolop Makerspace in the Science and Engineering Center. Join in a team mechanical design challenge to build an egg-cracking machine. Our mission is to create a chain of interacting systems, each of which triggers the next. For example, a golf ball rolls down a ramp and bangs into a pin, which pops a balloon, which allows a weight to sink, which pulls a hammer into the egg. One team member starts the first stage going with a finger, but no touching after that. Our goal is to end up with less than 50% of the shell and more than 50% of the egg goop in the cup. We will rejoice in our successes, and learn from our failures.

10:00: Families: Beyond the Numbers: Breaking Down Highly Selective Admissions, Dowling 745

Families will enjoy an abbreviated version of our popular "Beyond the Numbers" interactive workshop to provide a glimpse into what really happens inside the highly selective admissions process. Attendees will learn about the different components of a college application and how those materials are evaluated by selective admissions offices.

11:00: Students and Families: Facilities Tour

Current engineering students will lead small groups of prospective students and their families through our engineering facilities! Explore even more of what you can tinker, create, and collaborate here at Tufts. Your tour guide will bring their unique engineering experience, stories, and sense of humor on the hour-long tour.
