Wait...How Do You Spell That?
I’m sorry...How do you spell that again?

I remember thinking to myself when I first applied to Tufts, “Why Medford of all places?”. My whole life, all I ever wanted was to move to a big city, and leave my Midwest, suburban upbringing behind. Between the skyscrapers, young population, job opportunities, and social life, I kept wondering why Tufts wasn’t located in a bigger city like Boston, and started to doubt if this was even the place where I belonged. However, from the two months I’ve been here, I’ve learned just what makes it so special, and can confidently advocate for the Medford college experience!
The first thing I noticed when I arrived on campus was how peaceful Tufts University was. Being located in a smaller city than Boston, Tufts was able to secure a large central campus that is well integrated into the town, but also private enough to foster a sense of community. This has truly made my adjustment to college life easier, because no matter how many times I get lost due to my horrible sense of direction, I never feel unsafe. Additionally, the tranquility of our location has given me the opportunity to focus on my responsibilities and establish a routine, since I am not too overwhelmed by the distracting stimuli of a big city. Something I was not expecting to appreciate and connect with so deeply was Tufts’ array of flora and fauna. I have become more motivated to get outside, and find healthier ways to relieve my stress during turbulent times. I also love being able to smell pine and fresh air on my way to class everyday, instead of Boston’s signature mix of diesel and cigarettes.
This is not to say I don’t like Boston anymore. It’s a great city, with many wonderful attractions and opportunities to explore. Tufts provides a daily 45 minute shuttle to SMFA, which is our school of fine arts (located conveniently between Back Bay and South end) if you ever want to explore Boston’s shopping district, museums, or Chinatown! However, there are locations and events that are just as exciting to tour in Medford and Somerville for much lower prices and transportation times. Medford is an amazingly diverse city, with a multitude of attractions, cuisines (from Thai to Italian), and people from all walks of life. If you are ever in the mood for retro fun and good food, you could pay a visit to Colleen’s Ice Cream and Sandwich Shop. Or if you feel like hearing some jokes, you could enjoy a comedy show at the nearby Chevalier Theatre. In fact, just this month, they hosted one of the most popular nationwide stand up shows of 2021- Hasan Minhaj’s “The King’s Jester”! Somerville is another picturesque, small city located at the East end of campus. I would highly recommend taking a quiet walk through this town if you ever have time. The calm atmosphere of Somerville parks, neighborhoods, and small shops is breathtaking, and has often provided me with a nice mental break between classes. However, the short Tufts shuttle to Somerville’s Davis Square is equally worthwhile, if you are intrigued by a quaint, but bustling setting.
It is completely understandable to have doubts about the small city college experience, especially in regards to isolation and repetitious life. However, I can assure you that Tufts University prioritizes connecting students to the grand opportunities and diverse communities of larger cities, while simultaneously cultivating a sanctuary that allows us to grow and develop as individuals.
Until next time,
