One of my favorite ways to spend an evening at Tufts is taking the green line into the city to watch the Boston Red Sox play baseball at Fenway Park. Nothing beats climbing the stadium steps and getting your first view of the blinding lights illuminating the field, the “Green Monster” towering in the distance, the sounds of the organ hyping up the crowd, and the smell of fresh “Fenway Franks” and crackerjacks wafting through the air. Thankfully, being a student at Tufts makes it both convenient and cheap to spend a night like this.
In only about five minutes and with a Tufts student email address you can sign up for the Boston Red Sox’s Student 9s promotion. It works just like this: every few weeks when the Red Sox are playing at Fenway Park you will receive a text message or email saying that tickets are available for that day's game. You simply click the link that they send you and you can buy two tickets for the game for only $9 each! You will want to be quick with the purchase because there are only a limited number of tickets available, but in my experience, I have never had trouble getting tickets to a game I wanted to go to (Sometimes they even have tickets for Red Sox vs. Yankees games!).
And that’s it! You’ve just scored tickets to a night with the Red Sox for you and a friend for less than $20. The next step is getting to Fenway Park from Tufts, which thankfully is very easy to do. One option is the Green Line, which has a stop on campus right next to the Joyce Cummings Center (JCC). Simply take the metro a few stops until you get to Government Center and then take the Green Line (C) a few more stops until you get to Kenmore and then you are only a short walk away from Fenway.
Another great option is utilizing the Tufts School of the Museum of Fine Arts Shuttle which travels between the Medford campus and the SMFA nearly every hour and can be tracked online. This free shuttle will drop you off at the SMFA which is only about a 10-15 minute walk from Fenway Park. This is my personal favorite way to get to the Red Sox games because of its convenience, but both options are fantastic and easy to navigate.
Maybe you don’t consider yourself a baseball fan but I encourage you nonetheless to go to at least one Red Sox game with your friends during your time at Tufts. It’s a cheap and easy way to spend an afternoon or evening, and you will get to experience the charm of the oldest active Major League Baseball stadium in the country. And if you’re not from New England, just maybe you’ll be converted into a Red Sox fan.
