Sleepless in Somerville

Jumbo Talk

Let's cut to the chase - this post is about the exact opposite of its title.  While reflecting upon my first year at Tufts, I began to realize just how much I slept. I have always been a huge fan of naps and strongly believe that everyone else should be, too.  Below are five wonderful pieces of advice about napping in college paired with five pictures of me napping from this past school year.

1. Naps are really important.  After a long morning of classes, sometimes the best thing can be a quick afternoon nap.  It can be refreshing and relaxing.

2. Making time for naps is also really important. It is crucial that you make time for naps.  I admit to even scheduling naps into my day every once in a while!  Because a cat nap can be rejuvenating, it can make you work more efficiently and engage more in class.

3. Don't be afraid to nap outside of your room. In a friend's room?  Nap there.  Hanging out in the common room of your dorm?  Nap there.  Get to class early and the room is empty? Nap there!

4. Ensure that your nap is not too long.  According to the National Sleep Foundation, naps should ideally be 20-30 minutes.  This is when friends and/or phone alarms can come in handy.  Have a friend wake you up after a quick nap to ensure that you do not fall back asleep or set an alarm on your phone.

 Quick nap in the library.

5. Everybody naps.  If I don't say so myself, I would argue that napping is one of the most popular college activities.

As Annie says in "Sleepless in Seattle," They knew it. Time, distance, nothing could separate them. Because they knew. It was right. It was real."

*** Note: She is talking about the relationship between people and naps, of course. Sweet dreams!
