Community Through Dancing: AURA Fashion Show
Through my experiences in Tufts groups and clubs, I have quickly learned to appreciate the extent of collaboration between other Boston schools in…
As I was deciding which college to apply to, Tufts checked all my boxes like no other. A huge part of what I wanted in a school was to have various opportunities to participate in activities outside of academics. At Tufts, as I attended virtual events and read online it seemed clear to me that there was an immense amount of encouragement placed on getting involved in campus, and since arriving it couldn’t be more true! At the club fair during Orientation Week, I discovered countless clubs and organizations that all peaked my interest. I definitely experienced a trial period of trying various activities and looking into various groups. I would also say it’s very normal to put down your name for countless clubs’ sign up sheets but now as I’ve settled in I’ve discovered what fits into my schedule and makes me happy!
Since I’ve been dancing since the age of 2, I was committed to finding a group on campus where I could do what I love most- dance! The strong dance program at Tufts was a huge part of why Tufts showed me it had everything that was important to me, all in one place. Since arriving at Tufts I've witnessed the incredible nature of the dance department here as it is filled with colorful and exciting opportunities to participate in all dance types! A group I have joined this semester is Tufts Harlem Grooves, a group dedicated to celebrating and showcasing Black American dance forms. As a Black student on campus, I really aligned with the message of this group especially having navigated the predominantly white dance world for practically my entire life. The importance of showcasing choreography that has long ensued messages of Black history and culture is what makes being a part of this group so special. Since joining Harlem Grooves I’ve been able to add dance to my routine and meet new friends along the way. It has been the best of both worlds in continuing my training as a dance while creating new meaningful connections over a shared passion.
Another way I got involved with dance at Tufts was by attending an audition that peaked my interest. I saw all seniors that were completing the Dance minor here at Tufts were holding auditions to find dancers to use in their final choreography projects. This was a perfect example of trying any and all things that interest you, because I am now dancing with the greatest group of girls twice a week while helping produce a beautiful work of art. This is just one example of the countless opportunities available for students. Much of what I now participate in, I just happened to hear about by email or word of mouth. The point is, there is something for everyone and you will find people who share the same interests and passions as you in and out of the classroom. Since the beginning of the school year, my extra curricular activities have surely been a highlight of my experience.
