As we continue with the spring semester at Tufts, the chilly weather, erratic rainfall, and early sunsets can bring on a case of the Winter-itis. Dealing with this can be tough, but there are some ways you can design your routine to stay on top of things. Here are some strategies that I used this year to maintain high productivity levels during these colder months:
Early Riser Strategy:
Getting up early might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a game-changer when it comes to tackling the winter slump. Even if you can't dodge late evening classes altogether, try to arrange your schedule so that you're done before the sun sets. This way, you can make the most of the daylight and avoid the drag of the early evening.
Smart Schedule Design:
Having an early schedule is a bit tricky but aim for a timetable that aligns with the brighter parts of the day. Opt for morning or early afternoon classes when possible. This simple adjustment can sync your routine with the natural daylight cycle, helping you stay more alert and focused.
Change of Scenery:
Studying at home can sometimes feel like a one-way ticket to the snooze town. Mixing things up by heading to off-campus spots like cafes or libraries really helps. The different environment, background noise, and smell of coffee can do wonders for your focus and productivity.
Stay Active:
Winter often brings the temptation to hibernate, but staying active is crucial for both physical and mental well-being. I try incorporating quick home workouts, going on a run if it's not too cold, or hitting the gym. This helps me combat the winter blues and keep my energy levels up.
Set Realistic Goals:
Winter-itis can sometimes make everything feel more challenging. Combat this by setting realistic and achievable goals for yourself. Break down larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps. It’s important to not be too hard on yourself if things don't always go as planned. Setting realistic goals helps maintain motivation and prevents feelings of overwhelm during the colder months.
I hope some of these tips help and remember it’ll be summer soon :)
