Last year, I chose Fitness and Individual Development (FIT) as my pre-orientation program because I wanted to prioritize my health and well-being as I transitioned into college life. Coming to campus in August, I was both excited and nervous about starting this new chapter. FIT turned out to be one of the best decisions I made at Tufts!
The program focuses on promoting wellness and physical activity, covering essential topics like nutrition, stress reduction, and self-care. I loved that we engaged in a variety of activities, including yoga, basketball, rock climbing, mini golfing, and bowling. These activities not only helped me stay active but also allowed me to bond with fellow students who shared similar interests.
From the first day of FIT, the sense of community was noticeable. We participated in workshops that educated us about healthy habits while encouraging us to support one another. By the end of the week, I had formed friendships that have continued to grow throughout my time at Tufts. It was fulfilling to start my college journey surrounded by a tight-knit group of peers.
One of the highlights was having the chance to explore Boston together. We ventured into the city, discovering local spots and enjoying group outings. These experiences not only helped us familiarize ourselves with the area but also allowed us to connect with older students who shared valuable insights and resources. Having them as a resource still today has been incredibly beneficial as I navigate my academic and social life at Tufts.
The FIT pre-orientation isn’t just about fitness; it’s also a great way to learn about campus resources and explore the Medford/Somerville area. These learning experiences helped me acclimate to the campus and the surrounding community, making my transition smoother. As a program that emphasizes wellness, I was able to have important discussions about balancing academic pressures and self-care. Given the current climate and upcoming events, we emphasized the importance of mental health and provided resources for students to manage stress effectively.
Watching students this year in FIT reminded me so much of myself and my friends from last year. Being part of a small group allowed us to get to know each other deeply, creating a strong sense of community. I still enjoy seeing what my fellow Jumbos are up to on campus and how they’re navigating their college journey!
If you’re considering applying to Tufts, I highly recommend exploring programs like FIT and other pre-orientation options. They offer incredible opportunities to connect with peers, prioritize your well-being, and set the stage for a fulfilling college experience.
