Combining Passions: PPGA Club Highlight

May 08
Emma Desserault Jumbo Talk

Since my first year at Tufts, I have been involved with the Tufts chapter of Planned Parenthood Generation Action (PPGA). PPGA is the college chapter of the greater Planned Parenthood organization. At Tufts, our PPGA chapter focuses on advocacy, awareness, and fundraising efforts. Some of our past projects include: a menstrual product drive, a benefit concert, and a panel with the Bad Old Days Posse (a group of women who discuss their experiences pre-Roe v. Wade), and so much more!

I am currently the vice president of the Tufts chapter of PPGA, and I have loved serving in a leadership position within the club, as it has allowed me not only to lead but also to work on exciting projects of my own design. This semester, I, along with some fellow students in the club, worked on one of my favorite projects yet: a book display in the Tisch Library. Along with being in PPGA, I am also an English major and an avid reader, so this project combined so many of my passions: reproductive rights, reading, library resources, and more!

The project began with an idea from another member of PPGA, Jasmine, who suggested a collaboration with our Tisch Library. We each picked a book on reproductive rights, maternal health, or women’s rights in general and submitted a list to the library. The library approved our list, and we worked with them to create blurbs and a display for the books. After months of hard work, our display is officially up in Tower Café (inside of Tisch Library) for the month of March!

This project was so special to me, not only because it allowed me to combine my passion for books with my passion for reproductive rights, but also because it allowed me to engage more deeply with the Tufts community in a way I hadn’t before. I am a big believer in the power of stories, especially books, to inform and create empathy and understanding, and I believe that this display and collaboration with the Tisch Library will truly expand the minds of my fellow Tufts students, faculty, and staff. And I, too, discovered new books through this project! This project is a great example of what you can accomplish as a student here at Tufts. Your passions can be united, and you can truly impact your community.
