One of Tuft’s hidden gems is the Tufts Mountain Club lodge located in Woodstock, New Hampshire. Cleverly named the Loj, the wooden cabin is homey, cozy, and always full of food. Tufts Mountain Club (TMC) is one of Tuft’s widest and most prolific clubs across campus. With opportunities almost every weekend to spend a few days at the Loj, it is a great place to create new friendships and immerse yourself in nature.
I love the Loj because it is not only pen to granola-eating and Teva-wearing students. You can sign up to get a ride on the TMC van and spend your time reading or swimming in the nearby stream while others complete 4,000 footers of NH or learn to boulder outdoors.
Last year, I went up for Lojstock—an annual celebration of all things music and the outdoors. We had pasta and vegetarian chili for dinner and played cards on the faded orange sectional. The next morning, I volunteered to make pancakes and ended up mixing and frying over 5 batches for the whole group of about 30 people. After my day spent hiking Mount Cannon, all the small groups reunited at the Loj to enjoy veggie burgers and hotdogs on the grill and sit around the campfire.
If you’re interested in spending a weekend at the Loj, the first thing to do is get a TMC membership. After you pay on the sliding scale of $1-15, you get access to gear rentals, TMC events, and Slack. Make sure to check the Slack often so you can be the first to know about special weekends at the Loj like Newks (newcomers), POC-kend, Ski-kend, and more. And anything else going on with TMC will be posted on Slack or published in the weekly emails.
