A Week in my Life Training for the Boston Marathon

Apr 20
Sophie Axelrod Jumbo Talk

This April 20th, I am more than excited to run the 2026 Boston Marathon as a member of the Tufts Marathon Team (TMT)  raising money for the Tufts Friedman School’s critical research surrounding childhood obesity, cancer, hunger/famine, and healthy aging. Here was a week of recent training as I prepared to run the race.

Saturday

Easy 8 miles. I slept until 9:00 before meeting up with my friend Thomas for a run. We met up at the Powderhouse Circle where we decided to head into Davis Square to go to the Green Line C Path. The Green Line Path is also commonly referred to as the Community Path. It is my favorite place to run near campus, it is located about half a mile from my house, you can take the bike multiuse path all the way into Lechmere, and, from there connect with the Charles River Path.

Thomas and I ran 2 miles towards Somerville High School before turning around, running back towards Davis Square, to reach 4 miles. When Thomas left to go to his tour guiding shift, I ran 2 more miles towards Harvard Square. I ran down the Massachusetts Avenue sidewalks, turning around as I hit the Marathon Sports store. Popping in to check out some gear I may want, I then head back down Massachusetts Ave, turning to meet Davis Square, and then run the final mile to my off-campus house, rounding out the 8 miles.

Sunday

I ran 11 miles with the Tufts Marathon Team. I woke up at 7:25, so I could get ready for Tufts Marathon Team practice. The weather was very cold this morning, but we still ran 11 miles, leaving from the gym at 8:00am. I ran with Sam and Lauren, as we adventure down Boston Avenue, down Mystic Valley Parkway, around the Mystic Lake. This loop has a giant hill in the middle of it, and, honestly, my legs felt tired. However, it was a beautiful run, as we went through the cities of Medford, Winchester, and Arlington all in the same run. There were beautiful views of the Mystic Lake throughout the route. Coach Don Megerle, who organizes TMT, had multiple gatorade, water, and fuel stops along the way to make sure we were nourished.

Monday

Rest day. I decided to sleep in and take the day off, not really doing too much physical activity besides walking around from class to class.

Tuesday

Easy 7.5 miles. I ran with my friend Grace at 10:30am after our 9:00 classes down the Green Line Path again. Grace and I met a few years ago when I was her pre-orientation leader, and we have remained close. We both bump into each other on our individual runs, so it was good to actually run with her instead. Also, the weather warmed up to 45 degrees and the sun was shining, so we had a good chat and ran 2.5 miles again towards Somerville High School before turning around to complete a 5 mile chill and conversational pace run.

Wednesday

TMT 7 miles at 7:00 am. Even though it is late March, it is still 32 degrees, so I need to layer. I wear a long sleeve and a quarter zip, as well as my hat and mittens. I join 20 others as we gather outside the gym, before running our classic out and back along the Mystic Lake. I run with Sam, Clara, and Mia as we enjoy the cold run. We get back to the gym and enjoy chocolate milk, munchkins, fresh fruit, and catching up with Coach Don.

Thursday

I ran another 7 miles between classes in the afternoon, running to Harvard down Massachusetts Avenue toward Porter Square and Cambridge. Then, continued through Harvard Square to the Charles River. Crossed Anderson Bridge into Allston, followed the Boston side of the River towards MIT. Went past the Weeks Bridge and kept along the River for another half a mile to reach 3.5 miles, before turning back to finish the out and back route.

Friday

I did a nice 4.5 miles towards Union Square at 8:00am on Friday, and, since I have no Friday classes, I decided to check out new parts of Somerville. I decided to explore by running on the sidewalks of Highland Avenue in Davis Square for a couple of miles before turning to Somerville Avenue to head back through Porter Square and make the run a loop instead of and out and back.

Saturday

Long run day! On Saturdays, I usually like to do my long runs, so I decided to run 18 miles! I decided to change things up and go on an adventure to Fenway Park. I ran to Fresh Pond, continued through Cambridge towards Harvard, ran along the Charles River before crossing the Boston University bridge. From there, I made my way into the Fenway neighborhood, through Brookline, and, then to Jamaica Plain to run around Jamaica Pond, and along the Charles River to reach Lechmere. This run was a great way to see so much of the city and enjoy the nice weather to prepare for actual race day!
