As a high school student, I thought I knew exactly what a day in my life at college would eventually look like. I figured it would be very similar to high school: I would go to classes from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., then I would have club meetings, and then do homework. Having been a college student for almost a year and a half now, I can safely say my days do not resemble that at all. Here is a glimpse into what a typical Tuesday and Thursday looks like for me at Tufts. My day may look different from other college students,’ which is perfectly normal, as most people have varying classes, social lives, and responsibilities.
8 a.m: Wake up.
I usually try to wake up around eight every day, as I like to have plenty of time to get ready in the morning.
8:30 a.m: Gym.
I go to the gym around 3-4 times per week. I find that starting my day off by going to the gym helps me wake up and start my day on a positive note.
9:30 a.m: Shower.
This one is pretty self-explanatory.
10 a.m: Breakfast/get ready for the day/homework.
I am a big oatmeal lover, so I usually start my day with a bowl of oatmeal and a homemade chai latte with oat milk. I then get dressed and ready for the day. While I am getting ready, I like to listen to an audiobook. I am currently listening to Amanda Gorman’s poetry book, Call Us What We Carry. If I have some time, I will also work on some homework during this time.
12-1:15 p.m: Class #1: Spanish 22.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I have Spanish 22 from 12-1:15 p.m. We are currently reading La Multitud Errante by Laura Restrepo in class and I am really enjoying the challenge of reading novels in Spanish!
1:15 p.m: Lunch.
Most days, I have lunch at Carmichael Dining Hall, as it is very close to both the Olin Language Building and my dorm building. I have been loving having a soup and salad combo recently.
2-4:15 p.m: Study.
In between classes, I do homework. I am most productive in the mornings and early afternoons, so I try to get as much work as I can during this time so that after my last class I can have dinner and not have to worry about having to get a ton of work done. I also use this time to do laundry or do some cleaning if I have extra time.
4:30-5:45: Class #2: Short Fiction.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays during this time I have Short Fiction. I may be a bit biased since I am an English major, but I absolutely love this class and always look forward to it.
5:45-7 p.m: Dinner.
After my Short Fiction class, I have dinner. I try to have dinner with friends if I can, and I usually eat either at Carm (Carmichael Dining Hall) or I get something to go from Hodge (Hodgedon Food-on-the-Run).
7-9 p.m: Homework/FaceTime Family.
If I still have work I need to get done, I try to finish it after dinner. I also use this time to FaceTime my family back home, as this time slot works well with both my and their schedules since we are in different time zones.
9-10:30 pm: Rest and Relax!
After I finish my homework and/or FaceTiming my family, I like to either watch some TV, read, or both. I try to read for at least thirty minutes right before I go to sleep as I think it helps me wind down better than watching TV.
10:30/11 p.m: Sleep.
Getting enough sleep in college is super important so I try to prioritize my sleep as much as I can.
That sums up a typical Tuesday/Thursday in my life here at Tufts. My Mondays and Wednesdays are a bit more chaotic, but I have no classes on Fridays, so it balances out. On weekends, I spend my time doing homework, going to club meetings, and spending time with friends. Additionally, I had rehearsals a few times a week this past semester for a show I did with Tufts 3ps, a student theater group, so sometimes my nights were spent at rehearsals. Building a routine that suits you at college can be difficult at first, but I believe it is absolutely possible to have a good balance in your daily life between school, social life, and extracurriculars.
