At the end of my third semester, I thought I’d take the opportunity to share my experiences as a sophomore here at Tufts. Going through my fall semester as a sophomore has been a lot different than experiencing it as a freshman. Of course, some things are still the same; I’m still constantly meeting new people, discovering new things about Tufts and Boston, and learning a ton in all my classes, but things are definitely easier now that I’m better adjusted to college life and know more about the resources available to me.
As a sophomore that’s mostly done with the general engineering requirements, I had more freedom in the classes I chose to take. This semester I tackled the infamous CS40: Machine Structure and Assembly Programming, CS20: Web Programming, FAH1: Intro to World Art Great Monuments from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages, PE48: Strength Training, and ES18: Computed Aided Design.
CS40 is known to be one of the most challenging and rewarding courses offered by the Computer Science department so I was eager to take it early. After spending countless hours completing challenging homework with partners, I can confirm I definitely learned the most from this unique course. In CS20, I was able to learn about web development through group projects where we created different websites that I could add to my portfolio. FAH1 was the first humanities course I took at Tufts and I really enjoyed studying different works of art and architecture from around the world. After taking the course, I've been able to spot different elements of ancient architecture all over campus! PE48 was great since it gave me time to go to the gym and access to the varsity gym which is reserved for athletes and students taking gym classes. My favorite class this semester by far was ES18. Learning how to use different software to create 3D models of objects and even architecture was an amazing experience. I loved making my midterm project, an orchid lamp, and the final project, an animation of a house that I created using Revit, an architectural modeling software.
Since I was taking classes with heavier workloads, I had less time to explore the communities around Tufts than I did last year, but I still was able to go on a ton of different adventures on and off campus. My favorite memories of off-campus adventures this semester were going for walks on the Charles River Esplande, seeing a planetarium show at the Charles Hayden Planetarium, traveling to Syracuse, NY for the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Fall Regional Conference, and seeing Flo Milli in concert at Brighton Music Hall. I did plenty of great things on campus this semester too like volunteering with Building Audacity to combat food insecurity in the Boston area, playing Jeopardy with NSBE, doing self-care with my suitemates, and attending the annual Ivory on Ebony Gala hosted by Tufts Black Student Union.
I loved my past semester at Tufts and I’m excited to get back on campus after winter break and start a new semester in the spring!
