Three Students Share their Path to Tufts
A joy of being an admissions officer is sharing so much of Tufts with so many different students. We never know which part of our community will resonate…
Freshman year, I walked into my first Tufts Tap event to find another Emma. We quickly began to go by Emma L (her) and Emma S (me), just so that it wouldn’t get too confusing. If two Emmas in a 20 person group wasn’t crazy enough, the two of us joined the first tap Zoom this year to find yet another sophomore Emma in the Zoom room, Emma G! The three of us have a lot in common—we are all rising juniors in the tap ensemble with various intended psychology majors—which allowed us to all become fast friends; however, at Tufts, everyone has their own stories to share, and here are ours!
First, I’ll start with Emma G, our newest Emma to join the Emmas Who Tap Club. Emma G transferred to Tufts for her sophomore year, and immediately found her communities at Tufts through Tufts Tap and Active Minds. Next year, Emma G is going to be an RA in one of our freshman dorms where she will help facilitate community building with our class of 2025. She is studying biopsychology with a minor in child study and human development, which she is putting to use this summer by nannying for four adorable children!
To sum up her Tufts experience, Emma G says, “Coming into Tufts as a transfer student during a pandemic was, surprisingly, an incredibly easy transition due to the warm and welcoming nature of the Tufts community. There is a place for everyone at Tufts and not only that, but each and every student I’ve met at Tufts is not only willing, but excited, to connect with people and tighten the bond between Jumbos.”
Next up, the fabulous Emma L, one of the OG Emmas. Emma L applied to Tufts regular decision and found her niche in Tufts Tap, Jumpstart, Wind Ensemble, and Flute Ensemble. Besides being a remarkably talented dancer, teacher, and musician, Emma L is also very academic, and she enjoys studying psychology, her major. This summer she is a student visitor at McLean hospital, where she is working in Dr. Ipsit Vahia’s Technology and Aging Lab.
When asked about her current “Why Tufts?” Emma L answered as follows: “One of the things I love most about Tufts is how I am surrounded by individuals with so many diverse interests and passions. I personally have many topics I could go on and on about, from reality television to tap dancing to clinical psychology to music. At Tufts I have found amazing people to share just about all of my interests with!”
My "Why Tufts?" was, and continues to be, similar to both of the Emmas. I was an early decision applicant who knew I wanted to go here because of Tufts’ welcoming, intellectually-curious, and collaborative community. Through my involvement in Tufts Tap, Tufts Kappa Alpha Theta, Tufts History Society, and Tufts Admissions, I have cultivated strong relationships with many students. To add to the craziness of the Emmas Who Tap Club, I am a clinical psychology major. I am also majoring in history and minoring in dance. This summer, I am working at a local bookshop (the oldest continuously operating bookshop in the country!), and next week, I start interning for Tufts admissions, where I will be giving tours to prospective students like you!
All of us Emmas Who Tap got to Tufts in different ways and at different times, but once we got here, we learned to love Tufts and the relationships we have built here. If you learn anything from this blog, besides the fact that there are a lot of Emmas in Tufts Tap, I want to reassure you that at Tufts, you will find community. Whether you make friends because you are all named Emma and tap and study psychology, or whether you make friends by other means, you will make friends!
Lastly, my Emma’s Advice for you today is for all of the Emmas out there reading this—audition for Tufts Tap, and we just might let you in to keep up the Emmas-Who-Tap legacy.
Just kidding... Or am I?
