You might be wondering what is next after you have matriculated into Tufts – do you dive head first into classes?

While you could certainly attempt that if you wanted, we have a better approach.

Advisers:

Pre-Major

All matriculating students have a pre-major adviser assigned to them. This adviser assists in the transition to Tufts as well as helping you figure out and possibly expand your academic passions. They will help you choose classes in subjects you already know that you are interested in while also providing some information on electives classes, extracurricular, possible internships, and other ways to get involved on campus. Some of the pre-major advisers might also teach a few classes themselves!

Major Adviser

Your major adviser is a professor who typically teaches courses related to your major or intended research field. This professor is there to help you finishing plotting a course toward graduation, while also assisting you and providing information / resources for any research, thesis projects, internships, or other opportunities that might be helpful to you along your academic journey.

Depending on what your goals are, you might find yourself with multiple major advisers. This usually happens for students who double major, students who have thesis projects that span across two specialized topics in one major (or that incorporate multiple majors), or students who plan to utilize their major and minor research within a thesis project.

Tutors:

There is a variety of tutors at Tufts to help you.  You can request a tutor for a specific class and even find writing fellows who can help with essay writing.

Libraries:

Never underestimate a good library! Tufts has an amazing selection of books that you can check out for personal reads or for class work. If you are unable to find a book within the physical library, there is also a system for requesting books from other libraries.

There are also several librarians and library aids there to help you find books and articles, as well as help you with tricky citation styles.

Career Center:

Later down the line, when you start searching for internships and other work opportunities, head over to the Career Center. The Career Center specializes in helping students further their passions with hands-on opportunities as well as resume polishing.
