Co-captains here! Jo Clair and Sara Hedtler bringing you the latest from the Tufts Softball team.
The 2013 Division III National Champions were back in action beginning on March 15 in Clermont, FL. Every year, the team travels to Florida to play 14 games during our spring break. After a very cold winter, the new team of 21 girls was eager to get out on the field and in the sun! It took a few days for the team to get into the groove of playing on dirt again, but once settled, we were able to pull through with a few great wins against Keene State and North Central Illinois. However, this season’s theme seems to be inclement weather. After being completely rained out on March 17 and rain-delayed the next day, the team was back in action that night and continued our winning ways for the remainder of break. We finished our spring break trip with a final record of 12-1. Rain seems to be the least of our worries these days, as our field in Medford remains unplayable due to this winter’s harsh conditions. We will begin our campaign in the Northeast on April 1 at Babson and hope to be playing back on Spicer Field soon!
Junior pitcher Allyson Fournier continues to dominate in the circle and senior pitcher Lauren Giglio has had a strong start after being sidelined last year due to injury. The infield boasts a lot of depth and talent, as many players are competing for a starting role. Returners Sara Hedtler and Michelle Cooprider lead the outfield, while senior catchers Jo Clair and Chrissie Massrey hold down the fort. The eight newcomers add a lot of talent, both offensively and defensively. With this potent combination of leadership and skill, the 2014 Tufts softball team looks to defend their National title. As our slogan says: Just do it. Now, do it again.
