I vividly remember writing my ‘Why Tufts?’ essay, filled with excitement and nervous anticipation. At the time, I envisioned myself in an environment where I could delve into my major, surrounded by a curious and passionate peer network, learning not just in classrooms but through discussions on big ideas. Tufts seemed like a community where academic rigor, innovation, and creativity uniquely converged through open-minded exploration, and I was eager to join this intellectually curious student body.
Now, as a senior looking back, I can confidently say that my experience has far exceeded those initial aspirations. My major and minor-related courses, such as Entrepreneurial Finance and my Economic Development Seminar, have been both challenging and inspiring, providing me with a solid foundation in my major and minors while also connecting me to practical applications of economics. As a Research Assistant at the Tufts Derby Entrepreneurship Center, I’ve helped analyze data to help shape program improvements and enhance the center’s impact, translating academic theory into real-world solutions.
Outside of the classroom, Tufts has also encouraged me to take on leadership roles and engage in service, which have been transformative. As President of the Tufts Association of South Asians, I’ve had the opportunity to serve and support a large, diverse community, more than doubling the number of cultural events and securing additional funding to plan new events. In my role with 180 Degrees Consulting, I’ve worked directly with clients from all over the world, creating sustainable solutions that address real-world social challenges. These experiences have helped me build confidence, develop new skills, and make meaningful contributions to my community.
One of the most memorable parts of my Tufts journey has been studying abroad through the Tufts in Talloires program. Spending a summer in France, I took classes against the breathtaking backdrop of the French Alps and connected with students and faculty in a setting far from campus. This experience opened my eyes to the world in ways I hadn’t anticipated, reminding me that learning can happen anywhere and that stepping out of one’s comfort zone brings invaluable growth.
Tufts has given me the freedom to explore, from my academic interests in economics, entrepreneurship, and finance to the personal connections I’ve made along the way. I’ve had countless late-night conversations with friends and received mentorship from my seniors and professors, all of whom have contributed to my growth. The Tufts community’s openness and encouragement have made me feel not only academically supported but also made Tufts feel like a home away from home.
To future Jumbos working on their “Why Tufts?” essays, my advice is to be genuine and reflect on what truly excites you about learning and being part of a community. Think about what kind of environment makes you thrive—maybe it’s the chance to collaborate with others, explore new ideas, or contribute to a community you care about. Rather than just listing activities or achievements, focus on how you hope to grow and connect at Tufts. Be open to surprises along the way; Tufts has a way of offering experiences beyond what you might expect. By approaching your essay with authenticity, you’ll capture the unique reasons why Tufts feels like the right fit for you.
