Coming to college is different than being in high school. You have more freedom, whether that be taking other classes or getting involved in various clubs; the list is endless. But one of the biggest things that has changed is being in charge of your money. That’s why I feel this guide will give you a sense in things that (in my opinion) are worth the money you are spending.
FOOD
While Tufts does offer great dining options, there may be a day or two when you want just to get food off campus. My favorite café spot is Tasty Café, which is about a 5-minute walk from campus. Other times, I would nag my friends to come with me to Chinatown to a place called Dynasty where they have excellent fried noodles. Finding cheap eats is always a nice hack, especially for students who want to save their money. Needless to say, I think it is nice to spend money when you have a craving for something specific!
What has also helped me when I don’t want to spend that much money on food is setting a budget. Considering affordable food options while still enjoying great food is important, and it's also very easy to find in Boston. Every single time I have gotten food off campus, I feel as though the money I spent was worth it! Therefore, spending money on food is something I find to be pleasant and meaningful.
TRAVEL EXPERIENCES
Travel is something I would highly encourage, mainly because college is the perfect time for students to explore. My parents always said to travel as much as you can before graduating. I have traveled a lot with my friends within the states, making memorable trips that we often reminisce about.
The traveling experience doesn’t have to be about going far, like taking a plane. I have also spent money on traveling to different places close to Boston, like Providence, Rhode Island or up to the state of Maine. There is still so much to see and explore, especially if you are not from around those areas. I find it fascinating that I still discover new places to experience, even after growing up in the New England area!
ROOM DECOR AND ACCESSORIES
This is something that isn’t necessarily an experience but is something that I think is important, especially when moving into a new environment. Maybe it’s getting a new rug, or a new poster. I believe that these things can foster the feeling of a safe and relaxed environment. Since students typically reside in their residence halls for at least two years, budgeting for these expenses is necessary to make your space more comfortable. I have found numerous resources where you can find free items, such as upperclassmen leaving behind their belongings and yard sales. You don’t need to spend much to make your living space your own!
Hopefully, this helps you decide what to spend your money on. Trust me, it’s worth it!
