“Womp womp” moments in college admissions
Often when people think of admissions officers, they envision a grumpy old man with a red pen, ruthlessly slashing through admissions files with one goal…
The Waiting Place…
A Dr. Seuss-esque guide to waiting for college decisions
Congratulations!
Today is your day
You’ve submitted your application!
You're off and away!
The hard part is over.
No more essays to write.
You’re done with applying.
You feel high as a kite.
But that high flying feeling
escapes rather fast.
All of a sudden it hits you
like an unwanted blast.
You’re done with applying
nothing else left to do.
What’s done has been done
and the decision’s not up to you.
You studied hard in school,
took the SATs twice.
You played two sports (plus chess club)
and volunteered with the elderly playing dice.
Now it’s out of your hands
What if it isn't enough?
The doubt has set in,
did you do cool enough stuff?
You’re all hung up.
You’re left in a worry.
And you wish, Wish, WISH
the admissions office would hurry, Hurry, HURRY!
You get yourself all confused
so you go off in a race
down long wiggling roads at a break-necking pace
and grind on for miles cross weirdish wild space,
headed, I fear, toward a most useless place.
The Waiting Place...
...for people just waiting.
Waiting for a train to go
or a bus to come, or a plane to go
or the mail to come, or the rain to go
or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow
or the waiting around for a Yes or No
Everyone is just waiting.
So I say to you now
as you wait, wait, wait
that no matter what happens
don’t dread your fate.
Whatever they say,
be it a “yes”, “maybe”, or “no”
everything works out in the end
and, oh, the places you’ll still go!
No matter what the answer
please never forget
you’re off to great places
and that’s a sure bet.
So, whatever your name is
wherever you’re from
whatever college does or doesn’t allow you to come,
you’re off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So...get on your way!
