I like libraries. I expect that many of you like libraries too. Of course, I adore the personal library in my bedroom back home, but when in Boston, the SMFA library brings a comparable homely sensation. Aside from a warm breeze no matter the season, the W. Van Alan Clark, Jr. Library at the SFMA carries a catalog of books of nearly every genre and form. In addition to offering traditional books, the special collections wing contains countless artist books (my favorite part of the library) including the infamous cheese book (as in, it's made of cheese). Located on the third floor, the library can be accessed via the central staircase in the atrium or the elevator on the ‘A’ side of the building.
Like any libraries, renting books from the SMFA library requires little hassle with much haste—either present your student ID or your read your ID number, and the librarians will take care of the rest. To return rentals, you can either visit the librarians directly or use the drop-off right outside the library doors. Although many books in the Special Collections are not available for renting, any inquiring email to Darin Murphy will beget a private viewing of the incredible array of artists books. Moreover, as a bookbinder, I would recommend that any student enroll in one of several bookbinding/book arts courses at SMFA—I have had several successful class visits to the Special Collections at the SMFA library.
With a view overlooking the Fens, accessible hours, and an impressive array of traditional books and artist’s books, the SMFA library provides an intimate space for relaxation, study, and, in times of need, inspiration.
