“Welcome to the Tisch Scholars Program!” Imagine the joy I felt when that email popped up on my screen. At that moment, I honestly wondered what more I could possibly wish for. I later heard that I am among the first few engineering students to ever join this program — a program that has existed for over 20 years now. I’m sure you might be wondering: what exactly is this program, and why is it such a big deal to me?
My journey so far has been fueled by an unrelenting determination to help rewrite the cancer story in the world. It may sound like a big dream — especially coming from a boy who, not too long ago, could only imagine it from across the globe before coming to Tufts. But now, I can see the pieces slowly coming together, one step at a time.
The Tisch Scholars Program is one of the many impactful initiatives offered by the Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts. Its model is built around selecting a cohort of students each academic year, placing them with host organizations throughout Boston and neighboring cities like Medford and Somerville. What makes this program so unique is that students can choose placements that either align with their academic paths — complementing their majors — or connect with their personal passions. It’s designed to help students grow, learn, develop leadership skills, and most importantly, give back to society.
The selection process is highly competitive, which made my acceptance all the more meaningful. I know how dedicated I am to my dream, and it’s inspiring to realize that many of the other students selected share that same deep commitment to learning through service. We are all on a journey — treading the path of growth, leadership, and impact.
Looking ahead to the fall semester, I can already imagine the train rides to my host organization being filled with a sense of fulfillment and vibrant energy. Buckle up — the journey is just beginning. With each step, I am slowly but surely rowing this boat toward victory in the fight against cancer.
