One of the hobbies I’ve picked up since coming to Tufts is running. I’m not exactly (what Bostonians would call) a wicked fast runnah, but it’s nice to get outside and get moving. Luckily, both Tufts and its vicinity offers a plethora of opportunities to run at whatever level you may be.
One of my first (and favorite) experiences with running was with Tufts University Club Running. They host a plethora of events such as practices, regional meets, and destination runs. As a newcomer, without much experience with running at all, it was a bit intimidating to hear about all of the options, but Club Running really has something for everyone. I didn’t find the prospect of competing to be fun, and the group was completely understanding of this, presenting a welcoming environment to work on form (which was my goal with run club). Additionally, the people I met through Club Run helped keep me accountable, as well as equipped me with the right resources (videos to work on form, Strava) to ensure my success.
If solo running is more of your thing, then I am happy to introduce the various different routes around Tufts. One of my favorites involves running down Boston Avenue to the Mystic River State Reservation, a trail that loops around the Mystic River. Whether it is a sunset run to view the Mystic, or a destination to jump in and swim, the Mystic River remains dear to my heart, and makes the harder runs a bit more enjoyable and worthwhile. Another path that I love is the Somerville Community Path. 3.2 miles of pavement is particularly noteworthy because of its proximity to the MBTA (the train!). I’ve run down the entire path before, and taken the train back to Tufts’ stop on the Green Line. Additionally, lots of bikers and runners share the path, increasing the motivation to run alongside (or past!) them.
Running has become one of the most rewarding parts of my time at Tufts, not because I’m particularly fast, but because it gives me space to explore, grow, and connect. Whether through the supportive community of Club Running or the peaceful routes that wind through Medford and Somerville, I’ve found that there’s always a new path to take, both literally and figuratively. No matter your pace or experience level, Tufts offers countless ways to get moving, enjoy the outdoors, and discover what running can mean for you.
