Reflecting on the College Application Process

Jan 30
Jumbo Talk

Hi everyone! This blog is for students who are eagerly awaiting their college acceptances. We at Tufts remember how hard that process can be and wanted to give a few pieces of advice and some reflections that we hope make waiting just a tiny bit easier.

When I think back to the process of applying to college, I remember being stressed and just wanting to know if I got into Tufts. I had applied Early Decision, and even waiting for the one month period between sending in my application in November and receiving my acceptance in December was extremely hard. So if you’re a student waiting on acceptances to come out, believe me when I say that I know it’s tough right now. But I can tell you honestly that it all gets so much better… this is the hardest part, and it’s almost over; your hard work will pay off so soon!

As extra reassurance that everything will fall into place as it needs to, I wanted to share a few pieces of advice my suitemate who applied Regular Decision to Tufts told me he would give to students eagerly awaiting their own regular decision acceptances. Two years ago, when he applied to college, all of the schools he applied to didn’t offer early action, but he didn’t have only one top school, so he didn’t apply early decision either. Instead, he sent in several regular decision applications, which meant he wouldn’t find out about any acceptances until March. He told me the hardest part was having to wait and not know anything, while some of his friends had already gotten early acceptances and knew exactly where they were going to school. Though he admitted this wait was stressful, he also said, “It’s important to remember that you’re going to end up with some great options,” even if they might not be the ones you originally pictured. No matter what happens and which colleges accept you, you still will have the opportunity to pursue an education in subjects that excite you, and to make new friendships and connections that you will take with you after college.

My suitemate also emphasized the fact that, after decisions finally came out in March, the best thing he did for himself was to learn more about the schools that accepted him. It’s important to remind yourself that you will know your options soon enough, and then the exciting part comes in: you get to explore those options and fall in love with a school that will soon be a second home. It’s only a little more of wait over the next few months, and then a big reward as you take one step closer to one of the best times of your life.

Something that I wanted to add alongside my suitemate’s advice and reflections is simply this: it really does all work out in the end. College admissions counselors dedicate themselves to reading every last detail of your application to find out whether the school is somewhere you can learn, grow, and most importantly, be happy. College applications are absolutely a hard process, with the stressful periods of waiting, and sometimes getting results that you didn’t expect. I hope that, if you happened across this blog, you will soon get the exciting news you’ve been waiting for and will join this wonderful Tufts community. We cannot wait to get to know you! But I do have to say one last thing: Please know that, no matter what college you end up at, it is because the people from that college believe in you and want you to succeed, and they want to be the ones to help you do that. Good luck to you all, and congratulations on all your hard work!
