Padel to the People

If you haven’t heard of padel yet, you’re missing out on one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. It’s like a fun mix of tennis and squash, played on a smaller court surrounded by walls that make the game fast-paced and exciting. With millions of players worldwide and its popularity exploding in countries like Spain, Sweden, and even the U.S., padel is becoming a global phenomenon. In my opinion, Tufts should jump on this trend and make it part of our athletic culture.

So, what makes padel so special? For starters, it’s super easy to learn. Unlike tennis, where beginners can struggle with serves or long rallies, padel is designed to be more accessible. The rackets are smaller, there’s no overhand serving, and the walls allow for some fun, creative gameplay. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or someone just looking to try something new, padel offers something for everyone.

Another reason padel is taking off is its social vibe. Since it’s usually played in doubles, it’s a great way to connect with friends or meet new people. It’s casual, competitive, and doesn’t require a ton of prior experience. Imagine having a padel court on campus—students could come together between classes, play a few games, and de-stress while having fun. It’s the perfect balance of fitness and community.

At Tufts, where we’re all about embracing diversity and innovation, introducing padel courts could add something fresh to our athletic offerings. We already have amazing tennis and squash facilities, so why not take it a step further? Padel courts are relatively small, so they wouldn’t take up too much space, and they’d be a unique addition that not many other schools have yet. Plus, Tufts could host intramural or club padel tournaments, bringing even more energy to our campus life.

As Tufts continues to look for ways to promote wellness and community, incorporating padel could be an exciting opportunity. Whether it’s building a court or starting a club, embracing this modern sport would show that Tufts is always forward-thinking and willing to try something new. So, let’s rally for padel at Tufts. Who’s in?
