I have a goal of leaving campus every weekend to do something fun. Tufts’ location makes it really easy to get around Boston and explore New England! Here are some of my favorite off-campus adventures I’ve had this semester:
1. Davis Square - Somerville
I recently took the Tufts shuttle to Davis Square with a friend, and we had a fun time exploring the Somerville flea market and getting lunch at Life Alive Cafe. After that, we walked to the Somerville Community Path. Throughout the summer, cat owners had placed humorous campaign signs for their cats along the path, which we were excited to see. These cats were competing in an election to become the “Bike Path Mayor.” We went to the path at exactly the right time, as the cat Minerva, whose campaign slogan was “crime,” was being announced as the winner of the election!
2. Smolak Farms - North Andover
This fall, my friends and I decided to go apple picking at Smolak Farms to celebrate the fall. It was my first time going apple picking, and walking through the rows of apple trees was such a fun experience. When we got back to Medford, we used the apples we picked to bake an apple pie!
3. Bunker Hill Monument - Boston
As a history nerd, I love getting the chance to explore Boston’s freedom trail, which is a path of landmarks related to the American revolution. The last stop on the freedom trail is the Bunker Hill Monument, a tall obelisk. It’s located in Charleston, which is a really cute neighborhood to walk around in. When I visited the monument, I decided to climb the 294 steps to the top, where I was rewarded with a beautiful view of Boston.
4. Newport - Rhode Island
One weekend, my friend invited me to spend the night at her house in Rhode Island. It was really nice having a chill weekend away from campus! We binge-watched TV, walked her dog, and visited the beach in Newport.
5. Boston Public Library
My classes end super early on Thursdays, so a friend and I decided to go to the Boston Public Library for the afternoon to study. It’s a really beautiful building with lion statues lining the staircase, a courtyard with a fountain, and marble walls. The dark academia vibes were perfect for locking in on my homework.
