If you come from a city, you know how easy it is to get lost in a concrete jungle—skyscrapers everywhere, constant noise, and not much green space. I grew up in that kind of environment, so every now and then, my family would take a road trip to escape the chaos, get some fresh air, and reconnect with nature. But coming to Tufts has made me appreciate nature in a way I never did before. The beauty of the outdoors is right at our doorstep, and it’s so easy to find peaceful spots to recharge when campus life starts feeling overwhelming.
One of my favorite places to go is Veterans Memorial Park, which is super close to Tufts. I love going for walks there, especially in early fall when the weather is crisp, and the leaves start changing colors. The park is such a peaceful escape, and it’s a great place to clear my head. I’ve also gone there early in the morning a few times to watch the sunrise, and it’s honestly one of the most gorgeous sights I’ve ever seen. The soft light over the water, with the calm of the park, makes everything feel so still and beautiful—it’s the perfect way to start the day before the hustle and bustle of classes.
Running is another one of my favorite ways to destress, and Veterans Memorial Park has some great trails for a quick jog. Since it’s so close to campus, it’s easy to fit in a run when I need a break. There’s just something about being outside in nature that helps clear my mind and recharge my energy. Plus, the fact that it’s such a peaceful space right next to campus is a huge bonus.
If you’re looking for something more active, you can try Paddle Boston at Condon Shell in Medford, which is located just a short distance from the park. Renting a kayak or paddleboard and gliding along the river is such a fun way to spend time on the water while enjoying the outdoors. Whether you’re going solo or with friends, it’s a great way to unwind.
Another favorite spot on campus is President's Lawn (Prez Lawn). It’s beautiful, especially in early fall when the leaves turn vibrant shades of orange and yellow. People often hang out there, bring blankets, study in the sun, or just relax. It’s a great spot to get work done or take a break and soak up some sunshine. Personally, when I want to clear my head or take a break between classes, I love sitting at Prez Lawn, taking in the sun and wind, unwinding, and listening to music. It’s my go-to spot to recharge, and it’s one of the best places to just relax and reset.
If I’m in the mood for a more nature-filled adventure, I’ll head over to Middlesex Fells Reservation. It’s a little further away, but the trails are worth it—especially in the fall when the colors are stunning. Whether you want to hike, bike, or just take a long walk, it’s an amazing spot to reconnect with nature.
Coming from a city, I never really took nature for granted before, but at Tufts, I’ve learned to appreciate it so much more. It’s easy to get caught up in schoolwork, but knowing I can step outside and find a peaceful retreat nearby makes all the difference. Whether you’re running, paddling, or just sitting on a lawn, Tufts has plenty of natural beauty to help you recharge. So if you’re considering Tufts, know that you’ll have access to so many amazing outdoor spots that will make you appreciate nature in a whole new way.
