My Why

Sep 26
Monique Giwa-Osagie Jumbo Talk

The "Why Tufts" question seems to be one of the most difficult questions to answer on the application. I believe it’s because answering it requires deep introspection. This means being vulnerable with yourself and what you envision your future becoming. It also means being honest with yourself about what your ideal college experience looks like and if it serves you. When I initially saw this question on my portal, I was hesitant and ended up saving it for last. When the rest of the application was completed, I came back to the question and reflected on where I was and where I wanted to go.

Reflecting on where I was, I realized that much of my high school experience was shaped by a firm focus on college-readiness. While I was academically challenged and encouraged to grow intellectually, I often found myself wanting a stronger social balance. In the quest for schools, this was at the forefront of my mind, and in perusing the Tufts website, something clicked. I saw a community that values both curiosity and connection, where students are inspired to broaden their intellectual horizons but also bring their authentic selves into every space. I came across student organizations that sparked my interest, unique classes that reassured me that my curiosities would be brought to life, and a campus culture that felt genuine and personable.

My time here has reaffirmed these initial thoughts. Throughout my classes, my thinking was constantly challenged, and I grew as a result. I especially remember courses like Introduction to Global Health, Love and Sexuality, and English, which taught me to think more critically about the world, its healthcare and societal systems, and how they can impact individuals. In the numerous club events I attended, I connected with different people and built community through enriching conversations. Also, I interacted with professors who are passionate about what they teach and are intentional about supporting every student. Tufts provided me with the opportunity to understand myself better in and out of the classroom, contributing to a wholesome experience.

I found joy in the small things, like an insightful comment in class that stuck with me for days, or a conversation with a peer that turned into a meaningful friendship. I realized that college, at its best, is not just about preparing for the future but about being present in your growth. Answering the “Why Tufts” question taught me to slow down and think about the kind of environment I wanted to be a part of and, more importantly, what kind of person I wanted to become. And now, having lived it, I know I made the right choice.

Now, as I think about where I want to go after Tufts, I’m carrying that same mindset. I want to continue being in spaces that challenge me, not just intellectually but personally. Tufts helped me see that ambition doesn’t have to come at the cost of authenticity. Moving forward, I’m determined to keep choosing paths that reflect who I am, and most importantly, I want to keep growing with purpose.
