My Journey as a Chemical Engineer

Apr 01
Shiv Gogia Jumbo Talk

When I first came to Tufts, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from studying Chemical Engineering. I knew it would be challenging, but I was drawn to how this field blends Chemistry, Physics, and Math to solve real-world problems. Now, as a sophomore, I can confidently say that choosing Chemical engineering at Tufts was one of the best decisions I’ve made.

Tufts offers an environment where I feel supported, even when the coursework gets tough. The professors are approachable and genuinely care about helping students understand the material. Office hours have been a lifesaver, especially when tackling complex topics like Thermodynamics or Transport Phenomena. What I love most is how practical the learning feels. Labs are intense but rewarding because I get to apply the concepts we learn in class and see how they work in real-life scenarios.

One of the things I appreciate about Tufts is the tight-knit engineering community. It’s easy to meet people who share your interests, and there’s always someone willing to study with you or help you figure out a tricky problem set. Plus, collaborating on group projects teaches you a lot about teamwork, which is such an essential skill in this field.

Outside of academics, I try to balance my schedule with campus activities. Tufts encourages students to explore interests beyond their majors, which makes college life more fun. For me, that means participating in clubs and sports that help me unwind after long hours in the lab.

Looking ahead, I’m excited about the opportunities Tufts offers for research and internships. Chemical engineering is such a versatile field, and I’m still exploring where I might want to specialize. But wherever I end up, I know that the education and experiences I’m getting here are preparing me well.

Overall, my time at Tufts so far has been filled with learning, growth, and connection. It’s challenging, but it’s also rewarding in ways I hadn’t imagined. If you’re considering chemical engineering at Tufts, I’d say go for it. You’ll find a supportive community, dedicated professors, and endless opportunities to discover what you’re passionate about.
