Growing up in Colorado, with weekends full of hiking, exploring, and enjoying the outdoors, I’ve always loved being in nature. When I came to Tufts, I was nervous about feeling homesick and worried I wouldn't have the chance to get out to the mountains. However, Tufts quickly surprised me with endless opportunities to get outside, and I found a community that made it feel like home. From pre-orientations to clubs and independent adventures, there are countless ways to explore nature both locally and throughout New England.
Incoming first-year students can participate in TWO (Tufts Wilderness Orientation), which is a five-day backpacking trip through New England. It’s a chance to learn outdoor skills, form lasting friendships, and take in some stunning views, all while sleeping under the stars with guidance and support from trained leaders. After your first year, you can even join the TWO staff, returning for trips across New England and training in New Hampshire.
There are also many clubs that help students get outdoors. The Tufts Mountain Club (TMC) is one of the most popular, they organize hikes, bike rides, lake trips, and ski weekends. TMC provides transportation, gear, and everything else you need. Tufts even has the Loj, a cabin in North Woodstock, New Hampshire, which is open to all students as a base for hiking, skiing, or simply relaxing in the mountains and doing a puzzle.
Another great option is the Tufts Ski Team, an alpine racing team that welcomes skiers of all experience levels. Through the team, I’ve been able to travel to a different ski mountain in New England every weekend, experiencing East Coast skiing while being part of an incredible, adventurous community. This has allowed me to become a better skier, make amazing friends, and see some beautiful views.
There are also plenty of independent options to get outside. Mystic Lake, just two miles from campus, is an easy walk, drive, or bike ride away. It offers beaches, running paths, and a peaceful lake to swim in, which is perfect for a quick escape from studying or a picnic with a sunset view. Middlesex Fells Reservation, about a 15-minute drive from Tufts, has miles of trails and truly feels like you’ve stepped off campus and into the wilderness. It's a great way to disconnect and relax in the outdoors without going too far!
Overall, Tufts offers so many ways to explore the outdoors. Whether you're an avid hiker or skier or just someone who enjoys being outside, you'll find endless opportunities to connect with nature and a community here.
