Favorite Books I've Read in my Classes at Tufts

Emma Desserault Jumbo Talk

Over the past three years, I’ve gotten to read many different books in many different classes, both in English classes and in other departments. Some of these books have become lifelong favorites, and some I’m even doing my senior thesis on! Here are a few of my favorite books I’ve read in my classes, and which classes I read them in.

1. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Read in my Frankenstein’s Sisters: Austen and Shelley class, as well as in Of Microscopes and Monsters: Science and Literature.

2. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Read in Frankenstein’s Sisters: Austen and Shelley.

3. There, There by Tommy Orange
Read in Contemporary Multi-Ethnic Literature.

4. Requiem Por un Campesino Español by Ramón J. Sender
Read in Spanish 21.

5. The Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki
Read in Contemporary Multi-Ethnic Literature.

6. Going to Meet the Man by James Baldwin
Read in Short Fiction.

7. Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
Read in Crisis and Critique: British Literature 1780-1950. I will be writing my senior thesis on Wuthering Heights, among other works by the Brontës, as well!

8. The Iliad by Homer
Read in Invitation to Ancient Greek Literature.

9. Grand Union by Zadie Smith
Read in Short Fiction.

10. The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams
Read in Introduction to Acting.

These are just a few of the many amazing books I’ve gotten to read during my time at Tufts. Both in and outside of the English department, as a student at Tufts, you will have the opportunity to read some incredible works of literature, and not only books, but also articles, journals, plays, and more that will shape the way you think and even the person you become.
