Business at Tufts

Jumbo Talk

Tufts does not have a formal business program for undergraduates. However, Tufts does have a minor in entrepreneurship that has proven to be an incredibly fulfilling part of my experience here. So far, I have taken two classes in the minor, so I will list some of the valuable skills you can gain from the entrepreneurship minor.

  1. Turning ideas into action. The entrepreneurship minor has a class on business planning that charges you with creating a startup from scratch. From identifying needs and brainstorming solutions to creating a business plan and presenting to mock investors, you will need to take an idea and develop it into a possible venture over the course of a semester. You will leave the business planning class with a taste of the dedication and passion needed to become a successful entrepreneur.
  2. Working with real-world professionals. For my marketing class, I am working with a healthcare company to improve their online and social media presence. I am working with a C-level executive, have weekly deadlines to hit, and provide tangible projects to the company. The professional experience I’m currently gaining rivals most internships, but I have it right at my fingertips as an academic course.
  3. Teamwork. For both of my classes, I’ve had to work with a team of students to create a business plan from scratch as well as develop a marketing plan for an existing company. Being part of a larger group of students has taught me how to delegate work responsibilities, resolve conflicts, and turn diverse ideas into concrete action. I will most likely be working with other people after I graduate, so working with other people in the classroom has been great preparation for life after Tufts.

Tufts may not have a business school, but the entrepreneurship minor provides students with opportunities to turn an idea into a business, gain professional experience, and work with a diverse range of partners. If you’re interested in the skills needed to break into business, definitely give the entrepreneurship minor at Tufts a look!
