One of the highlights of playing frisbee during the fall is the annual tournament “Lobster Pot” that is hosted by Maine Ultimate in South Portland. Every year, both men's teams go and play the top teams in the Northeast (plus a few colleges far far away like Florida or UNC Wilmington). This year, all teams (men’s and women’s) went to this fun tournament for the first time in program history. Besides playing frisbee with the team, many of my favorite memories occurred off the field. Here is how the weekend went!
Saturday
When going to away tournaments, wake ups can be pretty brutal. Our meetup time was 6 AM to make our game at 9 AM. One of my favorite things about the weekend is the car ride. We always try to get people in cars from all grade levels to build team relationships. Whether that be listening to each other's music or doing some sort of game, it’s always a great road trip. This may also be a reason why our team plays so well during tournaments. Once we arrive, we warm up by playing our favorite songs and hyping everyone up. It’s always amazing to see that even though we’ve been awake since such an early time, the vibes are always high. Because this is a tournament, the first day is always a pool play that determines if we can make it into the championship bracket.
We played three games on Saturday and did extremely well, making it to the championship bracket. Although playing extremely well, we were all exhausted from running and were ecstatic to leave! The games ended around 3:00 and the team decided to go to a local beach to relax. It was mid-October so the weather was nice enough to lounge on the sand but too cold to get into the water. That did not stop our team from all jumping into the freezing cold water. Once done, we head back to our homes that we are staying up in Maine. I had a midterm that Monday so I stayed up later than my teammates to finish my cheat sheet. And that was our Saturday.
Sunday
Like Saturday, the morning wake up was extremely brutal. Not because of the time, but more because my body was extremely sore. But, we all got up and went to the fields to play in the bracket. We warmed up and got back into the groove of things. We played our first game and unfortunately lost, putting us out of the bracket. That did not deter the team though as we continued to push through the last two games of the day with a lot of fun and building team chemistry. At the end of the day, we all huddled up, did our cheer, and concluded with our shout circle. After two long days of hard work, it is always such a rewarding feeling to be shouted out. Once we wrap up, the team heads back to Tufts and that concludes our trip to Maine!
Aftermath/Reflections
I think that being a part of a sports team here, regardless of it being varsity, club, or intramural, is always a rewarding experience. There is something about being on a team that cares about you and the sports that is always worth it. Little moments like jumping into the ocean or studying for an exam with the boys feel very precious. Especially being at Tufts, where the frisbee community is such a big program, it feels amazing to be in a community that has made a big impact on my college experience. And, I continue to say that there is always a place for people to be a part of the program, whether you have tons of experience or not.
Tufts offers a variety of different clubs and student organizations that are worthwhile to look at. If something is interesting to you, I would highly encourage you to look at this website: Student Organizations. I think that there is a place for everybody here at Tufts! Surprisingly, I am still finding and meeting new people everyday.
