A Semester in Tübingen: Embracing Culture, Connection, and Growth

Jan 29
Ruhama Mulugeta Jumbo Talk

When I first decided to study abroad, I didn’t fully grasp just how transformative the experience would be. Choosing Tübingen, a picturesque university town in southwest Germany, turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life. Nestled along the Neckar River, Tübingen is the kind of place that feels like it was plucked straight out of a fairy tale, with its cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, and vibrant student culture. But it’s not just the scenery that made my time there unforgettable—it was the people, the culture, and the chance to immerse myself in something completely new.

Tübingen’s charm is undeniable. The town’s medieval architecture is perfectly complemented by its youthful energy, thanks to the University of Tübingen, one of Germany’s oldest and most prestigious universities. Whether it was taking a leisurely stroll along the Neckar River, exploring the town’s many cafés and bookshops, or hiking up to Österberg for breathtaking views, every moment felt special. One highlight was joining a Stocherkahn ride—a traditional boat similar to a gondola—an experience that brought the town’s unique character to life.

Living in Tübingen wasn’t just about sightseeing; it was about truly immersing myself in German culture. I took language classes to improve my German and made it a point to engage with locals, whether at the weekly market in Marktplatz or during neighborhood festivals. German efficiency and attention to detail were apparent in everything, from public transportation to university life. At the same time, the warmth and friendliness of the people made me feel at home, even when I was hundreds of miles away from my family.

One of the most enriching aspects of studying abroad was meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures. Tübingen’s international community brought together students from all corners of the globe, and every interaction taught me something new. I forged friendships with students from Colombia, South Korea, Italy, and many other countries. Each connection brought a unique story and perspective, allowing me to see the world through their experiences. Sharing meals with a friend from Colombia, discussing cultural traditions with someone from South Korea, or exploring the city with a companion from Italy made me feel like I was traveling far beyond the borders of Germany. These relationships gave me a true sense of the interconnectedness of our world and showed me how studying abroad can serve as a window into global diversity.

Studying abroad is more than an academic endeavor; it’s a journey of personal growth. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me build confidence, independence, and resilience. For me, Tübingen was the perfect setting—a place where history and modernity coexist, where every day offered a new adventure, and where I felt connected to something much larger than myself. If you’re considering studying abroad, I can’t recommend it enough. Go with an open mind, embrace the challenges, and let the experience shape you in unexpected ways. And if you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Tübingen, prepare to fall in love with its charm, its people, and its unique way of life.
