A Guide to your Tufts Snow Day

Feb 05
Sophie Axelrod Jumbo Talk

Just because you’re no longer in elementary school doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy a winter wonderland. Snow days are super important and great ways to enjoy the Tufts community. As you hopefully already know, Tufts is located in Massachusetts, in the Northeast of the United States. In the winter, temperatures do sometimes enter the teens and below. However, the cold weather also can bring snow, and, with that snow, Tufts can turn into an in real life snow globe!

After the snowstorm this past weekend– the biggest snowstorm to hit Boston in my time at Tufts– I have been inspired to write about an ideal snow day here at Tufts.

In my opinion, you should make the most of your snow day at Tufts with fun activities!

1. Sleep in. Start your day late. You have nowhere to be, let yourself enjoy the slow start. Lounge in your pajamas.

2. Bundle up and get ready to go outside. Make sure you have a hat, mittens, a scarf, LAYERS, a warm coat, and a Tufts essential: your trusty Blundstone boots.

3. Walk time. Adventure to President's Lawn for winter activity galore:

- Perhaps you love to ski– you can admire or have a go at the ski jump that members of the Tufts Club Ski Team built, constructed from mounds of snow and other materials found around campus. Or you can have your crack at snowboarding as well! Just be careful!

- Perhaps you love to sled– you can head on to the other side of the lawn and have your go at a run down the hill! Either have a sled, ask to borrow a random person’s sled, or use any flat item and attempt to make your own toboggan! You can try going down once by yourself, but then pile as many friends as possible into the sled and race down together.

- Perhaps you love to play– get some snow rolling and build a giant snowman! When you get tired, plop in the snow and make some snow angels!

- And maybe perhaps you love competition– gather a chunk of snow and start a campus wide snowball fight! For a challenge, you can do all of the above activities all while trying not to slip and slide down the incline of the hill!

5. Snack time. You are probably wiped out from your snow adventures. You should treat yourself to some hot chocolate! Any of the TuftsDining locations can soothe this need, topped fresh with marshmallows and whipped cream. Or perhaps you’ve stocked up on a Costco supply of packets and now you’re ready to put it to good use.

6. Enjoy some inside activities as well. Warm up inside your dorm or your off-campus house and play some board games with friends. My favorites these days are Trivial Pursuit and Anomia, as well as a good jigsaw puzzle. Have fun and make sure you win.

7. Relax with a movie. Choose your favorite TV show or movie to enjoy during the cold. My go-to’s are rewatching New Girl episodes or watching any Rom-Com, maybe The Princess Diaries.

8. Do some baking. What’s better than the taste and smell of freshly baked cookies? I’d argue not much. Grab some friends, find a yummy recipe (hopefully with ingredients you have), and get cooking. This works in a dorm kitchen or an off-campus house kitchen, just make sure you share the treats!

By now, you’ve had a pretty good and busy snow day at Tufts. The snow can feel magical and very exciting, even if you’re from somewhere it snows a lot. Even if you are almost 22 years old like me, you can still find plenty of enjoyment making snow angels and the thrill of a fun sled ride. And, maybe, you’re not a fan of winter, but hopefully snow at Tufts can bring a smile to your face.
