A Day in My Life at Tufts (Engineering Edition)

Dec 02
Lola Omotosho Jumbo Talk

I want to preface this post by saying that no two days ever look exactly the same, but this is what a typical day feels like (for me) as a Mechanical Engineering student juggling classes, clubs, and the little moments that make campus “home.”

8:00 AM (…sometimes 9:00AM……… 9:30AM): Harleston Hall

The day usually starts with me turning off all 10 alarms I set from the night before, getting out of bed at the very last. I swear I try my best to get up early. Depending on how much time I have, I might or might not skip breakfast. Nonetheless, I head out, trying my best to be 10 minutes early to my first class of the day: ME20 aka Mechanics 1 with Prof. Koushyar (love her).

10:30AM: Joyce Cummings Center (JCC)

Class! YAY! During the next hour and forty-five minutes, a lot of knowledge is crammed into my brain, but very rarely do I ever leave confused. Which may sound unrealistic, but I promise it’s true.

12:00PM: Hodgdon Hall

This is one of my favorite times of the day: lunch. I usually spend this time either eating a Hodge wrap (better than the bowls!) with friends and gossiping or watching my lab videos last minute. More often the former than the latter. Maybe. Anyways, this is usually my time to just forget about all of my responsibilities and keke, and I LOVE a good keke.

1:30PM: Bray Laboratory

Lab. Nothing has humbled me this semester quite like this ME10 (Materials and Manufacturing 1) lab. However, I will say that it’s taught me a lot about what it’s like to be a practicing Engineer. Not everything will go as you expect or be perfect on the first try (...or three tries). In the moment, I might have been very frustrated but I look back on those times of challenge and appreciate the Engineer they’ve shaped me to be today. Side note: the header is a candle holder I made!!

3:00PM: Tsunming Tu Complex (TTC)

Calc 3. In my personal opinion, Differential Equations is so much more fun and interesting than this class.

5:00PM: Harleston Hall

I finally return to my dorm, my temporary home. On days when I’m feeling productive, I crank out some homework because you can always do a little more. Sometimes, I will watch an episode of whatever TV show I’m currently obsessed with. Right now, it’s Selling Sunset.

7:00PM: Dewick MacPhie

DINNER. If life’s chaotic, I bring my food to my room, put on some YouTube, and relax. If I’m feeling social, I grab food with friends in Dewick and catch up on everything that has happened since our last hangout.

8:15PM: Bromfield-Pearson

This is when my club activities start for the day. First up, an E-board meeting for Electric Racing. We usually have different sub-teams present design reviews, which helps keep us all updated on progress and overall headway made.

9:00PM: Jackson Dance Studio

My other favorite time of the day: practice! I dance with Roti and Rum (Rhythm, Unity & Movement), Tufts' Caribbean dance team! It’s a mix of working hard and having fun. We mess up, laugh, try again, and hype each other up when someone finally gets a move clean. The community is the best part, and I feel so supported by the team. I love my Roti Family!

11:15PM: Harleston Hall

Once I’m back in my room is when the grind really kicks in. Engineering never seems to run out of problem sets, labs, or readings, so I’m frequently working into the night. There are notebooks and stray papers everywhere, twenty tabs open on my laptop, and snacks within reach. I typically keep going until I hit the point where sleep becomes inevitable.

12:30AM: Harleston Hall

Usually, when I finally call it a night. Now you see why I oversleep!
