A Day in my Life as a Tufts Senior

Nov 05
Sophie Axelrod Jumbo Talk

Hello all and welcome to a Day in My Life as a Tufts senior. Today is Wednesday.

6:15 AM- My first alarm goes off. Very groggily I press snooze and close my eyes.

6:17 AM- Second alarm (rudely) goes off. I stretch my arms and get out of bed.

6:30 AM- Prepare for a Tufts Marathon Team practice.

6:45 AM- Meet up with my friend Kate to walk over to the gym.

7:00 AM- Arrive at Tufts Marathon Team (TMT). We smile for the classic pre run picture. Then we run 7 miles (7 @ 7) along the Mystic Lake. We stop for water and gatorade at miles 2 and 3.5 graciously provided by Coach Don. Kate and I catch up to our friends Sarah and Layla to run the rest of the route with them. The lake is beautiful this morning; the sun hitting the water makes it sparkle. My legs are feeling surprisingly decent for it being before 8:00 in the morning.

8:05 AM- Kate, Layla and I arrive back at the gym. We catch up with other friends finishing their runs and are greeted by an abundance of fresh fruit, munchkins, and chocolate milk. Coach Don snaps a few more pictures and asks how the run went. I have a quick turnaround to get back home to shower before class at 9:00.

9:00 AM- Class 1: Imagining Law and Order in the United States with Professor David Art. Today we discuss the origins of policing in the United States and Prohibition. We watch some of the classic gangster film, The Public Enemy, for examples.

10:15 AM- I meet up with my friend Venice after her French class and walk to President’s Lawn. We people watch and chill for a bit before heading to the Campus Center. The leaves are already starting to turn on the top of the hill, but we enjoy the nice sunny day.

10:45 AM- Study time at the Campus Center! Venice heads home, while I go to The Sink to get a “Cinny Vanilly” Latte and catch up on some homework. I have been reading about the Political and Security Theories of Migration for my Refugees, Migration, and Citizenship class.

12:00 PM- Hop on the weekly Student Communications Group Zoom Call. We discuss upcoming projects to be featured on the @tuftsadmissions Instagram page, as well as Jumbo Talk blogs (like this one)! We share our rose, bud, and thorns of the week as well.

1:00 PM- I head back to the Campus Center to get lunch from Commons Marketplace. I love their sushi, and I get a California Roll with my JumboCash. I work on my editing shift for The Tufts Daily, editing a feature article on Professor Sarah Fong in the Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora department.

1:30 PM- Class 2: Psychology of Anti-Black Racism in Health with Professor Aerielle Allen. We discuss interpersonal, intrapersonal, structural, and institutional levels of racism as it relates to both mental and physical health.

4:00 PM- I walk home from class, greeting friends as I move across campus.

4:10 PM- Arrive at my off campus house to take a much needed power nap before doing more homework.

4:45 PM- Tisch Library time. I try to be productive in the library, finishing up reading assignments and discussion posts. The key word being “try.”

5:00 PM- I end up yapping away with friends for too long, not being as productive as I promised myself I would be. But I manage to lock in, getting my discussion post for Introduction to Art Therapy done. This week’s reading explored the therapeutic benefits of drawing, particularly how it supports young women in juvenile detention centers by fostering connection and healing through art and art therapy practices.

7:30 PM- Time to walk home for dinner. Tonight I am feeling lazy, so I make Trader Joe’s butternut squash risotto. My housemate Nora had just gotten back from tap dance rehearsal. Nora and I sit together, eating our respective dinners and catching up on our days. As a biomedical engineer, Nora's schedule is definitely different than mine, but it is always nice to sit and have a meal together after a long day.

8:45 PM- Puzzle time with my other housemates. Sydney and Hilary are way better at it than I am, but we’re all determined to finish this 1,000-piece puzzle featuring really cute dogs and cats.

9:30 PM- Shower and chill time. I finish up some last minute work and watch some New Girl, getting ready for bed.

11:00 PM- Good night and lights out. Got to get my beauty sleep before my run tomorrow morning with my friend Clara.
