Count Me In -- Extracurriculars
If you are feeling intimidated by the college application process, I highly suggest breaking up the application into sizeable sections. One section…
In high school, if I wasn’t running from soccer practice to my high school’s sports magazine production, I was road-tripping six hours down to Southern California every weekend in the fall for softball tournaments, squinting in the dull light of my family’s Volvo station wagon, desperately trying to finish my AP U.S. History reading on the rides home. So when I arrived at Tufts, a Division III school whose league rules prohibit organized games or coach-run practices during the off-season, I had, for once in my life, a lot of time to myself. I felt like NFL player Phil Simm’s in Disney’s “What’s Next?” commercial, except that I hadn’t just won the Super Bowl and sadly, would not be going to Disneyland. Instead, with all the free time that I had just “won,” my response to the enthusiastic, “What are you going to do now?” was more along the lines of “I’m going to schedule class from 7:30-8:45 at night just because I can!” After just a few weeks of being on Tufts campus, however, I discovered a vast range of activities to fill my schedule with. Now, as a senior entering my fourth and final “off-season” I have learned that a). There are still plenty of softball related things to be done in the off-season despite the sanctions against organized competition and b). The opportunities that NESCAC schools afford student-athletes to pursue academic and extracurricular interests is a huge perk that has certainly set my experience apart from athletes at other schools across the country. Here is a quick look at my off-season experience:

The Rest of My Life:
Let this serve as just one example of what student-athletes here at Tufts accomplish during the off-season. Tufts Jumbos are notorious for not only representing their team but also various performance groups, entrepreneurial initiatives, philanthropic societies, and everything else in between. Although I am still kicking myself for never joining Tufts Dance Crew, as a veteran on campus, I am extremely satisfied with the number of extracurriculars and academic endeavors I have been able to squeeze into my schedule during my four years at Tufts, while also maintaining my identity as an athlete.
