Reimagining Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving 2019 was the first Thanksgiving that I ever spent away from my family. Since I’m from California, I decided it would be too much work to…
November is almost over and Thanksgiving is right around the corner! Since I am from Los Angeles, I do not go back home because it is only for four days. Especially this year, due to the pandemic, Thanksgiving will look different and feel unusual. In this blog, I want to share how I usually spend Thanksgiving in college. My plans have always been spontaneous, and they have been memorable in a good way!
In my freshmen year, I spent Thanksgiving day at the Asian American Center with some upperclassmen peer leaders and other freshmen. We spent the day grocery shopping and cooking together. This was my first Thanksgiving away from home, so I was glad I was able to spend the day connecting with other freshmen and getting to know the peer leaders. The AAC felt welcoming and it made me forget about homesickness. Overall, I am happy that I was able to spend my first Thanksgiving away from home at the AAC.
In my sophomore year, I went to New York with my friend. We had not planned the trip until the night before. We spontaneously bought a ticket to New York and created a quick itinerary. In New York, we did all the touristy things and ate delicious food. On top of that, we won the Wicked Broadway show tickets! It was my first Broadway show, and it was one of the best ways to spend Thanksgiving!
This year, my friends and I are thinking of having a Friendsgiving over Zoom. With the sharp increase in cases, it is important to follow the Covid-19 safety guidelines. Also, this year, Tufts is giving out free meals from local restaurants during the break which can be a pro of staying on campus (especially during a pandemic). Tufts usually gives JumboCash to students staying on campus over the break, which I use to explore stores that accept JumboCash in Davis Square!
These are some of the things I did for Thanksgiving at Tufts, and I hope you have a fun and safe Thanksgiving!
