April is a busy, busy time for everyone at Tufts, especially because it is when many groups on campus end up planning their events! I am involved in Tufts Society of Women Engineers, Engineers without Borders and American Society of Mechanical Engineers, all of which have many events in April.
April is most exciting for engineering groups that have competitions – the steel bridge team, hybrid race team and robotics team to name a few. These groups have been working since the beginning of the fall semester on their designs. The hybrid race team won their division last year, so they are looking to defend their title! Many of my friends are in the group and they have been working hard and feeling the pressure for many months now. They have to fundraise for, design, machine and build a new hybrid car every year. I always have some FOMO when they are working in the engineering computer lab because they are having so much fun and their SOLIDWORKS designs look so cool.
As always, there are lunch and learns galore. All departments run a seminar series with speakers from inside and outside their department, and it is a very casual way to learn about the applications of a topic. I’ve been to lunch and learns in many departments including mechanical engineering, environmental studies and peace and justice studies, just for fun. It is truly the best way to celebrate your nerdy side because they are so frequent and usually have food. I included my favorite ones in the calendar below.
