Tufts does not authorize acts of vandalism, with one exception. Almost nightly, tight-knit packs of Jumbos douse an otherwise meaningless Civil War artifact with primer and spray paint. While it’s perfectly legal, there’s no set schedule or sign-up sheet. If two or more groups want to paint the cannon on the same night, the first to get there camps out to defend its handiwork. The fun starts up again the next morning, when the campus tries to decode a message rendered in the dark.
