Over the course of my winter break I spent approximately twelve hours in the surf, three days on the couch, an embarrassing amount of time in front of various plates of food, and A MILLION BAJILLION years stuck in traffic… thank you Los Angeles.
Why all the traffic, Imogen? Why not stay on the couch with your father and get through all of this seasons movie screeners in a single sitting (I was close anyway)?
Fantastic questions! Well, this winter break instead of staying home and taking a break from life, I was fortunate enough to land an internship at Fullscreen through the spectacular CMS program here at Tufts.
I took part in what is referred to here as a “Winternship,” a weeklong internship sponsored by the Communications and Media Studies department and its pretty extensive alumni network in a communications based field. Fullscreen is a youtube branding company, aka a multi-channel network that works with YouTube creators, giving them the tools and support they need to reach mass success on the YouTube platform. They work with artists like Lindsay Sterling (the dance/violin wonder), Tyler Ward (major YouTube musician), Brittani Louise Taylor (huge internet personality), and Our Second Life (a group of boys vlogging about their lives each week), not to mention HEAPS of other impressive names. It’s a pretty amazing place.
For a week I was immersed in a fascinating work environment that made my close to two-hour commute worth it. Along with my fellow “wintern” Alex Geller (A’14), I spent the days immersed in YouTube videos, creating presentations about the different artists with Fullscreen, and was given the opportunity to pitch an ad-campaign for Capitol Record’s anti-valentine day song “Go F**k Yourself.” The office community was fun and welcoming, people were constantly coming up to Alex and I to ask us about our lives and entertain us with their stories, and our boss—and fellow Jumbo—Daniel Rosen (A’10), was fantastic, making us feel unbelievably welcome and giving us heaps of interesting things to do while sharing his own Tufts stories with us.
A week at Fullscreen made me seriously consider eventually going to work for them (well, if they’ll have me) and gave me an idea of what working in a communications based field could be like. I am slowly, but surely, figuring out what I want to do with my life, and thanks to Fullscreen and CMS, I’m getting closer. If only the traffic would let up. Seriously.
