From Pinewood, a powerhouse women’s basketball program in California, to an emerging national championship contender in Division III- this the story of Kelsey Morehead. I immediately recognized her high school program because my sister played for a basketball powerhouse and played against her team multiple times. In her four years at Pinewood Kelsey’s team won two state championships and she played for a very well respected coach.
In her college search Kelsey knew she wanted to stick with basketball and find a coach who was well respected too- Coach Berube at Tufts is just that. Along with playing for an excellent coach, Kelsey's advice to high school girls looking to play basketball is visit the schools and most importantly, talk to the girls on the team. Kelsey gave a story about visiting a school that was near the top of her list of schools, but after visiting with the team and seeing the school, the school fell off her list completely.
During our conversation strategy was a rallying point, but not in terms of making a college list, but rather on the court, in film study, and even in her favorite class which was Economics 24: Game Theory. The course combines her love of math and also real world experiences, including “credible threats, signaling, principle-agent problems, auctions, arbitration, voting, implications of asymmetric and incomplete information and collusion.” As she went through this class, Kelsey found it easy to translate the message of the strategy from the class onto the court. The approach to any problem is everything, and as a young lady who loves to do film study of her opponents, this class just made so much sense. It was then no surprise that Kelsey is a Quantitative Economics Major and Math minor because as she says "I’d much rather do math problems than write a paper." ...We both laughed a bit after that statement. Keeping up with this economics theme, she found an internship this past summer with a contract management company in the Bay Area (Apttus). The company uses salesforce.com to deliver its services to a broad range of clientele.
As a final note: check out the defending NESCAC champions as they open their season November 15th, and their home season Tuesday, November 18th in Cousens Gym.
