Tufts/SMFA Degree
The Five-Year Combined Degree program between Tufts and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts is designed for students who wish to pursue their artistic and academic interests to the fullest extent. Students in this program share their time between the Tufts School of Arts and Sciences and the SMFA.
Course of Study: Tufts and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts
Graduates of the Combined Degree program receive two degrees within five years: a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Fine Arts. The Five-Year program offers preparation for a career in the arts and unparalleled advantages for the professional artist.
This program consists of 84 studio art credits and a minimum of 24 academic courses. Students must fulfill the foundation, distribution and concentration requirements of a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree at Tufts, in addition to the SMFA studio requirements. Academic courses include the following:
- Two courses in English writing
- Two in the humanities
- Two in the social sciences
- Two in math
- Two in natural science
- Six in language and culture
- One in world civilizations
- Six in art history
- Ten to twelve courses in your major concentration
Applying: Tufts and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts
Students interested in applying to this program should file concurrent, separate applications for admission to the SMFA and to Tufts. Students must be accepted at both schools independently in order to be accepted into the Five-Year Combined Degree program. Applicants who are not accepted at Tufts are automatically reviewed by the SMFA for admission to their Bachelor of Fine Arts program.
Students wishing to pursue a studio art degree should only apply to the Museum School, indicating an interest in the Bachelor of Fine Arts.
