Internships
To provide students with the opportunity to apply various types of knowledge and skills in a field-based situation, internships for academic credit are offered by many departments, Career Services, or through the Experimental College at Tufts.
In some departments, internships are an integral part of the major requirements; for example, programs like Child Development, International Relations, Psychology, and Sociology have integrated internship options into the requirements to fulfill a major. Other programs such as Community Health, Mass Communication and Media Studies, and Peace and Justice Studies either require or strongly encourage the inclusion of an internship in their undergraduate program.
In past years, Tufts students have gained internship experience in hospitals, theater groups, television and radio stations, consumer protection agencies, public relations firms, courthouses, welfare departments and numerous social service agencies. All internships provide challenging practical experience in the "real" world as well as the opportunity to make contacts and network in their area of interest. Many students also turn their placements into paying summer work or full-time jobs post-graduation.
All programs in the School of Engineering encourage students to include internships during their undergraduate years, typically during the summer after their sophomore and/or junior year. Tufts Career Services Office and the School of Engineering work collaboratively to identify and develop opportunities for students. Tufts Engineering students have interned at software and electonics companies, research laboratories, consulting firms, government agencies, biotechnology giants, and entreprenurial enterprises.
