The Freshman Perspective

content block blog carolyn pruitt

In the ever confusing world of college searches and college admissions, The Freshman Perspective aims to be, like Tufts itself, a light on the hill.
Sponsored by the Admissions Office and written by me, first year student Carolyn Pruitt, the blog will chronicle life as a Tufts freshman.  I hope that it will be useful as you consider whether or not you come to Tufts.  But of course, this blog is about me and my life, and does not necessarily reflect the plethora of experiences of other freshmen.  And it should definitely not replace the more traditional college literature, campus visits, etc.
So enjoy and feel free to ask questions, comment, suggest ideas about future posts, etc!

First Year Thoughts

content block blog alexa rosenthall

Hi All!
My name is Alexa Rosenthall and I am going to be a Freshman at Tufts this fall. I am extremely excited – and I’ll admit a bit nervous – to embark on this new adventure. The purpose of me writing this blog is so that all of you prospective Jumbos can learn about the “Tufts Experience” in a fresh, unedited fashion. So, enjoy!

Transfer Blog

content block blog eugenia lee

My name is Eugenia Lee, and I’m a transfer student at Tufts University. I will be beginning my junior year in Fall 2009 after spending three semesters at the University of Iowa. I also recently returned from a semester abroad in Nairobi, Kenya, where I studied development, health, and society through SIT and worked with women entrepreneurs in the Kibera slums.
As a transfer student, I hope to be able to record my experiences in transitioning from a Midwestern public state school to living at the border of the slums in Kibera to attending a top Northeastern private school like Tufts- all in less than a year! Besides for this, I hope that, with my different experiences, I will be able to provide a different perspective of Tufts life, for both current students and applicants alike.
Tentatively, I am double majoring in anthropology and economics, and hope to work in international development when I grow up.  My interests lie in social entrepreneurship, Africa, grassroots movements, and traveling. Besides for being a full-time student, I am currently the Director of Publicity and Community Relations with Travel for Change. I was born in Queens, New York and grew up in Morganville, New Jersey where I indulge in all things Jersey such as jug handles, eating at diners, and going to the shore. In my spare time I like running, photography, obsessively reading my Google Reader feeds (63 and counting!), and going on random adventures.

Abroad in London

content block blog kyle

Hello! My name is Kyle and I am a rising junior at Tufts University in Medford, MA. I’m double majoring in Drama and International Letters & Visual Studies (ILVS), which is most easily described as international relations through the lens of the arts and humanities rather than social sciences. People often ask me what I want to do after graduation (a scary question to think about). I don’t quite know where my path will lead me, but I’m hoping to end up working in arts management or the arts and public policy.
Outside of my academic pursuits, I’m very involved in the Drama department and student theater scenes. At Tufts, I’ve worked as an actor, stage manager, music director, and producer. I sing with the Tufts Chamber Singers, a small choral ensemble run by the Music department. I also work with the Admissions Office as a campus tour guide.
I hail from Chicago (the city, not the suburbs) where I grew up with my family and our dog, Wasabi. This fall I will be studying abroad in London on a Shakespeare Studies program. I love reading, singing, jamming out on the piano, spending time with my family and friends, exploring new places, and ethnic cuisine.

Engineering Blog

content block matt thoms 5

Welcome, everyone! This is the home of the blog that I’ll be keeping over the next year to keep prospective Jumbos up to date on what goes on in the life of a Tufts student. I think it’s only logical that I start by telling you a little bit about myself.

I’m Matt, a rising senior in mechanical engineering with a minor in art history. At Tufts, I’ve been largely focusing on relating sustainability and environmental issues with my love of engineering and science. I lead the engineering facet of the Tufts University and Boston Architectural College entry in the 2009 Solar Decathlon, a Dept. of Energy sponsored competition to design and construct a house powered entirely by the sun. Shameless plug. Don’t worry, you’ll hear plenty from me about the Solar Decathlon as the competition in October quickly approaches. This year, I’ll also be working for The Observer, a Tufts’ student magazine, as an editor for their new environment section. Finally, I’m a member of the Tufts chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

Outside of Tufts, I enjoy live music, trying to cook, and exploring Boston. You’ll hear a bit from all parts of my life over the course of the year and I’m completely open to what you want to hear more/less about, so keep the comments coming!

The Admission Officers Blog

Content block blogs officers2

Working in admissions is fun.  Mostly.
Sometimes it can be stressful,  sapping, or just plain strange (like the time I gave a Tufts talk in a room with a stuffed moose).  And if you work in admissions long enough, you’ve got stories for just about any category.  We in the Tufts admissions office invite you to read our perspective as admissions officers, and to get to know us through our own voices.  On the silly side: learn about Becky’s love of the word “boom,” or Emily’s travel through Russia, or Dan’s obsession with varying primates.  On the serious side: hear about how we recruit, read, and relate to Tufts’ applicants.
We love the admissions cycle, both for experiences and for the excitement of watching a community come together.  Join us for that.

College Counseling for Counselors

content block blog peter jennings

The summer before starting his undergraduate career at Connecticut College, Peter was faced with what would become a critical life decision: would he rather perform clerical work in the admissions office or drive the Zamboni for his work-study job? He chose the former and that has made all the difference. For the last decade and a half Peter has earned his keep guiding students into their own undergraduate careers. After five years on the admissions staff at Pomona College and three summers counseling students at the Phillips Academy Summer Session, Peter became Dean of Juniors and Seniors at Harvard-Westlake School, a day school in Los Angeles, where he also taught tenth-grade English and coached cross-country and track. In 2000, Massachusetts and Concord Academy called him home. Since then, whether shepherding students through the college process, advising, teaching English, coaching cross-country, or serving as a house parent, boarding school life has suited Peter, his wife Sarah, and their three kids just fine. He has yet to drive a Zamboni.
While on sabbatical from Concord Academy during the 2009-2010 school year, Peter Jennings is enjoying the good fortune of joining the Tufts Admissions Office as Counselor-in-Residence and Admissions Officer.

The Global Jumbo

content block blog eileen guo global jumbo

My name is Eileen Guo, and I’m a sophomore at Tufts.  I previously wrote the Freshman Perspectives blog for the admissions office, which has been taken over by the lovely Carolyn Pruitt now that I am no longer a freshman.

I’m majoring in International Relations with a concentration in Ideas and Identity in International Affairs and a sub-concentration in Empires/Colonialism/Globalization (long titles, I know!).  I’m also considering double majoring in Latin American Studies and minoring in the Leadership Studies Minor.  But really, I’m just terribly indecisive, and trying to find the best way to juggle my interests in failed, failing, and recovering states; political and military sociology; migration; development; and…about five million more things.

On campus, I’m involved in numerous activities both global/active…and um, not…  I’m a tour guide for the admissions office, the chief relations officer of Tuftslife.com, a Student Ambassador in the University Office of Advancement, the ALLIES JRP trip leader, a member of EXPOSURE, a news and features photographer for the Tufts Daily, and an aspiring tango dancer with Tufts Argentine Tango.  I also train Capoeira with a local group off-campus.

Some other essential-ish facts about me? I am absolutely obsessed with True Blood.  I’m living in the International House this year.  I suggest crazy escapades that either end in disaster or lots of fun.  And despite being a tour guide, I am terrible at walking backwards.

So do sit back, enjoy, and ask lots of questions about the amazingness that is Tufts :)

Cross Country Engineer

 content block blog jeff r

Name:  Jeff Ragazzini

Major: Mechanical Engineering 2011

Home Town: Wilton, CT, an hour outside NYC

Campus Organizations: admissions office tour guide (retired), computer lab user consultant.

Previous Homes: 223 Houston Hall, 19 Teele Avenue, 150A Lewis Hall, 83 Ossipee Road.

Preferences when I was college searching: Close to home (no airports), but not too close (no getting a call from mom saying we’re out of eggs).  Integrated Engineering department.  Near a metropolitan area, but still a suburban campus.  Fun, diverse student body that does get caught up in competition.
